Letting Our Light Shine in Such a Way . . . that we do more than march

1/24/2017

Last Friday there was a march in Washington and in many other places.  This coming Saturday there will be another march in Washington - and in many other places.  The primary result of both marches will basically be that those who participated in them and supported them will be more committed to their previous stances, will feel good because they participated in them, and probably will change very few minds in the process.  There will have been activism on both sides with self-imposed monickers like pro-choice, pro-life - while at the same time calling those who oppose them far less positive names like anti-choice and anti-life.  But I am concerned that when it is all over what we will have is two groups who are more focused on the other side than they are on those caught in the middle.

Who are those who are caught in the middle?  In regard to the question of abortion - it is several groups of people.  First of all it is the women who face a pregnancy and what to do now that they know they are pregnant.  There is also whatever is in their womb that is at stake.  How is this being addressed?  Here is where I will begin to make my main point.  When Jesus said in Matthew chapter 5 that we are to,  “Let our light shine in such a way that people might see our good works and glorify our Father Who is in heaven,” I believe he meant something other than participating in a march.  Honestly - considering what He said about the “least of these,” I believe He had in mind stuff more like rolling up your sleeves and serving those who are caught in the middle.

I’ve moved away, in my latter years, from marching much any more.  Looking back over 50 plus years now, I see far more accomplished in addressing the abortion issue by rolling up my sleeves and working WITH the women who are caught in the middle of crisis pregnancies.  There are plenty of them who have written and spoken saying how grateful they were for a place where they were loved and helped in the midst of their crisis.  There are others who spoke through tears stating their gratefulness in having a place that loved them even after they had an abortion. Their thankfulness was for someone telling them and helping them find forgiveness when they thought it was not possible to be forgiven.  At last count I don’t remember any women thanking me for marching - at least women who were caught in the middle.  Do I think marching is wrong?  No, I cannot say that.  The right to express ourselves peacefully in a march - and even for some to carry signs with fairly incendiary messages on them (I’m speaking about both sides of the issue folks) is protected under our system of government.  There are also times when a peaceful march is needed.  But can I be perfectly candid with you who are reading this.  Keeping an accurate count of those at a march - that is hard work - and often debated as soon as the numbers come out.  Keeping an accurate count of those rolling up their sleeves and being dedicated over time to those women and whatever is in their womb in the middle?  That, my friends is rather easy - because the number plummets to easily manageable numbers.

I do attend a rally every year.  It is called "Sanctity of Life" day.  On this day those of us who come together tend to shy away from street protests and marches.  Our celebration of life focuses on God giving each of us, including developing babies in the womb, life.  It focuses on the real needs of women who are facing the extremely hard decision of what do to in a crisis pregnancy.  We focus on those who are hurting badly because they've had an abortion and wonder if they can be forgiven.  We focus on people who have adopted children - and face many hard, day-to-day realities of rearing a child who has everything from reactive-detachment disorder to babies coming off the drugs their mothers were taking while pregnant.  We want to encourage them - help them - and be respite families for them when they need a night together as a couple.  We do this because we know this will help far more than holding signs with incendiary messages that honestly do far more to infuriate the opposition than win their hearts. It would not be inaccurate to say that these gatherings are about remembering those people who are still in the middle - and celebrating some who have rolled up their sleeves to help.

Oh that we would be able to see that being a "light set on a hill" has far more to do with choices to address the problems of our society with hands-on, very hard, action-oriented solutions - than it does with shouting at - and eventually shouting down those who disagree with us.  According to our Lord, that light is visible as people see our good deeds.  They see them not in light of how awesome we are (which will do little more than cause us to be proud of ourselves for that self-glorifying awesomeness).  They see the motive for our works - as well as the works themselves - and glorify our Father Who is in heaven.  At the end of such works there are no congratulations in order for us - because we know what our hearts were like before He saved and changed us.  No!  All congratulation and celebration is focus on such an incredible Father Who has given birth (through salvation) and reared (through teaching, encouragement, and discipline) such good kids.  They honor and glory for the works belongs to God!  In doing them our hope is that they will know that we are Jesus' disciples by our love for one another, our love for those who oppose us, our love for the "least of these," and even our love for our enemies.  May our stand for life be seen far more often in these ways - than in holding a sign, yelling a phrase, and honestly - doing little or nothing to truly change our culture.  If we want to make America great again . . . why don't we try rolling up our sleeves, wading into the mess within our culture, and getting our hands dirty serving, loving, and ministering (and I believe this includes sharing the gospel with them), to those who are hurting because of its problems.  If you participate in a march - good!  But if all you do is march - and there are not regular marching orders to follow to selflessly and sacrificially fix the problems, your march ended far too soon.

A Beautiful Fight - 2 Timothy 4:6-8

8/9/2016

Picture
May God bless you this week and help you see that if you are fighting for a godly walk with Jesus – it is a beautiful thing in the sight of God.

In the fourth chapter of second Timothy Paul writes to Timothy about his own walk with God.  This happened right at the end of Paul’s life – when he was imprisoned in a dark, dank Roman jail cell.  It had to be a depressing place to spend the last days of one’s life – and yet Paul was able by God’s grace to write some wonderful things.  His description of the way that he sought to live is one of them.

For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come.  I have fought the good/beautiful fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith; in the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all who have loved His appearing.   2 Timothy 4:6-8

Paul speaks about fighting “the good fight” in these verses.  The Greek word for “good” here is “kalos” which means something good or beautiful.  We could actually translate this verse with either word and have an accurate translation.  Thus Paul is saying that the fight he fought was a beautiful fight.  It was a fight for joy in Christ no matter his situation.  It was a fight to live so as to honor and glorify God even when those watching his life would question why God would allow His servant to be imprisoned in this way.  From a merely human standpoint one might look at the latter days of his life and think, “Beautiful?  You’ve got to be kidding me!”  Yet we know that what is loved by this world is disgusting in God’s sight – and – what is often despised by the world is lovely in the eyes of the Lord.

Paul speaks about being “poured out as a drink offering.”  This is a picture of the Old Testament sacrificial practice of adding an offering of wine to the end of a sacrifice to the Lord.  At the end of the sacrifice, the priest would then pour out the red wine onto the ground at the base of the altar.  It was a kind of punctuation mark – an exclamation that the sacrifice was finished.  Paul, who knew that he would soon be martyred, used that imagery to signify his own death – as a punctuation mark on his own life of sacrifice to the Lord.  He knew that as a Roman citizen he would not be crucified, but most likely beheaded.  So he saw his blood in that moment as the finishing mark on his life given as a living sacrifice to God through Jesus Christ.

He also speaks of his time of “departure” that had come.  The picture here in the Greek language is of a boat that is being untied from its moorings so that it could sail away from the dock.  Paul knew that God was loosing him from this world so that he could be taken away to the next where he would be with the Lord Jesus for all eternity.  Some would look at such things and see them as sad – how Paul’s life was filled with suffering, difficulty, and in the end, execution for his faith.  They might also look at all the problems he faced with churches and individuals – and begin to wonder about his statement of a “beautiful fight.”

In all honesty it does not matter how “people” see our fight in this world.  It matters how God views and evaluates things.  The world evaluates us according to their standards and desires.  God has a completely different set compared to that of the world.  He looked at the struggles and battles that Paul faced – both as an individual (remember Romans 7?) and as a servant in the church – and said, “Beautiful!”  He delights in the sacrifice and service of the faith of those who love Jesus.  He delights that we battle through all the hard and difficult moments of our lives.  As we read in the Psalms – He delights in the death of His holy ones!

This week how I pray that He encourages you!  So often we can easily be discouraged as we walk through the valley of the shadows.  We can see the struggle and the difficulty and wonder not only about ourselves – but also at times whether God is mad at us or frustrated with us.  If you are fighting for godliness – if you are fighting for a servant’s heart – if you are fighting to have regular time alone with Him – if you are fighting to have joy in the Lord – God sees this as a beautiful thing – He sees it as a beautiful fight!  Therefore, be encouraged saints – be mindful that your battles and the tears shed in them are not falling to the ground unnoticed.  They are seen – they are collected – and they are considered beautiful by the Lord Who loves you more than life itself.

The Bitter Lie of Self-Reliance - 2 Chronicles 16

The Bitter Lie of Self-Reliance - 2 Chronicles 16

"In the thirty-ninth year of his reign Asa became diseased in his feet. His disease was severe, yet even in his disease he did not seek the Lord, but the physicians."

When I read this passage my heart sinks for Asa - and those who are offended with God's discipline and correction.  Asa was corrected for his actions - that he turned to himself and human means rather than turning to God - to embracing weakness - to embracing a situation where he would have to turn to God in prayer for answers.

Earlier in his ministry Asa did turn to God when the Ethiopians attacked with over a million men.  That had to be difficult to experience - facing the thought of your own annihilation - of being so weak and unable to defend yourself - and facing the uncertainty of whether you would survive the attack of the enemy or not.  BUT THAT IS HOW GOD WORKS - HE GIVES US TIMES OF WEAKNESS INTENTIONALLY - SO THAT WE HAVE TO EMBRACE BEING WEAK - BECAUSE WHEN WE ARE WEAK IN OURSELVES - WE BECOME STRONG IN HIM.

The problem was that Asa did not want to embrace weakness the second time he faced terrible odds - and the necessity of turning to God.  He was proud - and that pride manifested itself when God corrected him.  He became angry with God - angry with God's prophet - and eventually angry with even serving God later in his life.

God allowed another need to come upon Asa - a disease in his feet.  How appropriate for his situation - diseased in his walk in life/even as he was becoming more diseased in his walk with God.  He would not turn to God in prayer for this situation - only to the doctors.  He spent, amazingly, the last 2 years of his life in this affliction and even died of it - rather than turn to God.  His bitterness consumed him - first spiritually - and then even physically.

Am I willing to embrace weakness?  Is pride an issue in my life?  I hate to admit it but I know that it is.  I don't like being weak - don't like being reduced to nothing save God in prayer.  I want to be able to do some things myself (which is nothing more than an excuse to want to do all things myself - the deadliness of pride!).  Being reduced to nothing - and seeking God in those circumstances to be my everything is meant to be gloriously hard.  It is embracing humility - total humility!  And . . . if I will not embrace it - I will find myself diseased in my spiritual feet.  I will be unable to walk.  I will not turn to my God for that - and then eventually won't turn to Him for anything.  All I will have is man-made deliverance - man-made hope - and that is precious little (actually nothing) deliverance and hope.

Embrace humility!  Embrace being little . . . being nothing . . . so God will be everything.  He is everything - it is only the brief deception and mist of lies of this life that makes us ever think otherwise.

God have mercy on me!  I've been so filled with pride.  I have been so filled with self-importance and lying self-sufficiency!  Oh the sad state of my feet - and my ability to walk in humility, brokenness, and self-emptying trust and prayer before You.  Please forgive me the arrogance, pride, and foolishness of this way.  Restore me to full reliance upon You - upon Your infinite resources - and upon a life lived in complete dependence on Your grace.

The Glorious Move from Romans 7 to Romans 8 Living (part 1)

7/13/2012

These next several articles are long. They come from a series of things I wrote to a frustrated brother who sought help in an email relationship with me. He does not attend Calvary Chapel, yet his struggle is mirrored in the lives of so many who know the Lord, and yet who fight with sin in their lives. This fight will last all our days - but for many of us it gets very intense when we have an area of our lives where sin just seems to dominate us. Our struggle parallels that of Paul - but for those who want to move on to victory, we need to make the trek from identifying with Romans 7 to experiencing Romans 8. That is what these articles try to do. It is my hope that they are helpful to all those who wrestle with sin in an honest effort to be conformed to our Lord Jesus Christ.

For we know that the Law is spiritual; but I am of flesh, sold into bondage to sin. For that which I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate. But if I do the very thing I do not wish to do, I agree with the Law, confessing that it is good. So now, no longer am I the one doing it, but sin which indwells me. For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the wishing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. For the good that I wish, I do not do; but I practice the very evil that I do not wish. But if I am doing the very thing I do not wish, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. I find then the principle that evil is present in me, the one who wishes to do good. For I joyfully concur with the law of God in the inner man, but I see a different law in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind, and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin.   Romans 7:14-25

Now, as to the remedy for what you are facing.  You might want to seek that out by reading what comes after Paul's statement about his struggle/battle with sin.  He sees here that this has to come, "through Jesus Christ our Lord!"  But there is more to this - but it is in chapter 8 of Romans.

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so; and those who are in the flesh cannot please God. However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. And if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who indwells you. So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh-- for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, " Abba! Father!"   Romans 8:1-15

There is so much here in chapter 8 . . . let me take the next couple of days and break it down into small, daily, bite-size pieces for you.  Hope this helps!

Lesson #1 - It's the Spirit Who sets you free - Who grants you power to overcome.

Note that Paul says that it is the "law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus" that sets us free from the law of sin and death.  The "law of sin and death" is the old way (never did work) of making and keeping rules.  You have rules about sexual sin - rules about what you look at - rules about the computer - rules about self-gratification - rules, rules, rules.  The problem is that the Law never set any man free from sin.  In fact, Paul tells us earlier in Romans that the Law was given to show us we could never keep the Law - due to sin in our hearts.  Soooo . . . we also won't be set free by just "obeying laws and rules."  What we need is a different power than ourselves.  Our flesh will not submit to God's Law - EVER!

So Paul lets us know that we no longer live by the "law of sin and death."  We live by a new law - the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus.  We live by a different "life" than the one we used to have.  Thanks be to God - He gave us life in Jesus Christ.  The life He gave us?  Christ's own life - which can overcome sin every time!  What we need to develop is a willingness to run to God and to His Spirit in our battles.  You may be able to stop a thought initially - even make it go away temporarily - but you cannot put it to death.  It WILL come back later and bug you, annoy you, and torture your thinking until you give way to it.  Ever try to get a song out of your head - or stop thinking about something by TRYING to stop thinking about it.  Yeah - doesn't work does it.  Neither does fighting sin by trying to stop sinning and thinking about the temptation to sin.  What we need is MORE POWER! We need a different kind of life.

The Law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus  - is that we turn to Him, to His power, to His life, to think about Him.  This is so different - because our thoughts are no longer about the sin - but about Christ Himself.  The Scriptures say this about this battle, "But we all, with unveiled faces, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being changed into that same image, from glory to glory - even as unto the image of the Lord." What you look at is truly what you will become. We are no longer looking at sin - but now, by the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus - we are looking at Him - at Jesus - and we are being changed into His glory, by His glory, for His glory!

Let me ask you a kind of dumb question. How many times did Jesus lose a battle with sin - hmmmm - NEVER!  So as we turn to Him and His life - we look to that life in us as the power to overcome.  Suddenly it is no longer just us trying to stop sinning - it is the power of the Spirit working in us doing this.  That is why later Paul says this, "but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live."  How are we putting to death the deeds of our body?   BY THE SPIRIT!

Here is a little homework for tonight.  Take some time to pray - talking to God - and honestly - apologizing to the Holy Spirit (Who by the way IS God - third person of the Trinity). Apologize and confess as sin your actions (sin) that have been for grieving Him. Apologize for putting out His fire with your sin - and trying to do His work in your strength.  Once you've confessed your sin - ask the Holy Spirit to fill you with His power - so that by His power (rather than yours) you can fight sin.  By the way, when you think of the filling of the Holy Spirit - don't think of it as something filling you up.  The Holy Spirit is a person - not a thing.  Consider His filling - He fills you with His influence and a filling up your life with fellowship!  We speak of spending time with someone - and say at times, "My whole day was filled with time spent with my friend, wife, kids, etc."  We are filled with their presence - with what they say - with great memories - with wisdom as they talk to us - with love as they selflessly give themselves to serve and bless us.  It is the same way as we are being "filled with the Holy Spirit."  Be filled with His presence - with what He says - with great memories of time spent talking with Him and being taught by Him - with wisdom as He teaches you the Word - with love as He selflessly gives you the things of God and serves you and blesses you.  DUDE - SPEND AN HOUR - A WHOLE DAY - A WHOLE WEEKEND TURNING TO HIM AND GETTING FILLED UP WITH ALL HE WANTS TO DO AND SAY TO YOU!

This is just step one - we will look at more over the next couple of weeks.  For today - get better acquainted with the Spirit - and do some serious damage control in your relationship with Him.  Oh, how He wants to grant you power to fight sin - but in order to do that - you've got to stop thinking you can fight it on your own.

Here is one other thing to do . . . next time you have a temptation to sin - turn to God the Holy Spirit - and fight it WITH HIM!  Ask Him for power to fight - ask Him to teach you what to do - ask Him for the tools to PUT SIN TO DEATH - not just make it go away for a while - or until morning. This will transform your battles with sin - from something you do to something He does within you. This will make the battle more than just "not thinking or doing sin" to "turning to Him, seeing Him, knowing Him, and in the end being transformed to be just like Him by His power and might that powerfully works within you.

Spiritual Doldrums - and Spiritual Storms

6/4/2012

For the past couple of weeks I’ve been writing columns about the spiritual doldrums of life.  These are times when things slow down and we feel like there is not a lot of wind in our sails.    This week, as we finish the third in this series of three columns, I want to address the danger of not being ready for storms that are associated with spiritual doldrums.

When doldrums exist in the equatorial regions of the ocean—there is a deadness in the air.  Because of the heat that is present at this part of the earth, the waters can superheat due to having little of no wind to dissipate the heat that settles on them.  This can cause the most erratic of storm patterns.  One moment doldrums can be completely calm—with the winds dead as can be.  The problem is that in a matter of moments, the superheated water can rise and cause very dangerous thunderstorms called, “super-cells” to form.  It is in these moments that a sailor needs to be able to read not just the winds, but the skies as well.  Experienced sailors knew that when their ships were caught in doldrums—there was a high likelihood that there also might be a storm before things were over.  Therefore they watched the skies diligently for any kind of sudden updraft of air or formation of a super-cell.

Anyone who has had a bout of spiritual doldrums knows that this is true in the spiritual realms as well.  We can move from a time that seems spiritually lifeless—to a situation where we are in a serious spiritual battle or storm.  We need to be reminded of the admonition to “watch and pray” because our adversary the devil is like a roaring lion—seeking someone to devour.  If you’ve never gone from a doldrums to a battle—you cannot imagine the way things go from ridiculously slow to overwhelming in a matter of moments.  This is why we need to be alert in times of spiritual doldrums—and not be lulled into spiritual slumber.  There were sailors whose entire job was to watch the skies during these times.  A lack of attentiveness by the “watch” could mean the difference between life and death in an approaching storm.  Therefore we need to be watchful—even in times when things seem boring and slow.  Most of us have heard the saying, “the lull before the storm.”  That is often what spiritual doldrums are—the quietness and seeming calm right before things break loose and get pretty crazy.  The wise man makes his way through these times using discipline to maintain his spiritual edge—but also using spiritual discernment to be aware of trouble on the horizon.  This way he is not off guard when the storms break loose.  He is ready—watching—praying—and alert to the spiritual atmosphere around him.
