Where Were You When I Started It All?  Job 38:4-7

Part 3 of Meeting God
A Series of Articles on Job 38-42

God has a very powerful way of bringing Job to a place where he acknowledges that he may have a limited perspective on things.  Job has experienced suffering at a level few humans can even grasp.  In the midst of dealing with his suffering Job was visited by his “friends.”  As their question and answer sessions proceeded, Job was eventually accused of wickedness and sin, which they believed brought on Job’s sufferings.  In the back and forth that ensued, Job called upon God as his witness to defend and verity his innocence.  Now God has “shown up” - literally.  He will eventually vindicate Job, but before He does, He asks Job a few questions to help him with perspective in his situation.

That often is our problem in the midst of suffering.  We battle with wondering whether we have done something sinful that brought our situation to pass.  We struggle with the thought that we are being punished and that God is angry with us.  That is why we are suffering.  For those who have not committed a sin that is being visited with discipline, things are even more difficult.  And it is in navigating those difficulties that we can lose perspective and begin to wonder about God Himself.  We can even toy with questions about His sovereignty and management of our providential circumstances.  God does come to Job spectacularly - and He will come to us as well.  The thing is that if we expect Him to explain Himself in the matter, we may be greatly disappointed.  God comes, not to explain Himself to us, but to reveal Himself to us - and that is what He does with Job.

God reveals Himself with a series of questions.  His first is this:  “Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?”  Wow, now there is a doozy of a question right at the start.  Where exactly were you when I started it all?  When the foundation for all that you know, see, and experience was laid?  I didn’t see you there.  That is a question that honestly needs to be asked, not just of Job, but on a much larger scale - to all of humanity (especially of those who are scientists).

God reveals Himself to us in ways we can grasp and here, God uses building terms to help Job grasp what He is saying.  The Lord first speaks of laying a foundation.  Yet, we know that there are no pillars or supports on which the earth rests - no massive Titan who carries the earth upon his shoulders.  Job understood that because he said in 26:7 that God, “hangs the earth on nothing.”  This is poetic language and as such we need to be careful not to understand it in a literal way.  In fact, what we see here is God using building terms such as . . .

  • Who laid the foundations of the earth?
  • Who set it’s measurements?
  • Who stretched the line on it?
  • On what were its bases sunk?
  • Who laid its cornerstone?

All these terms were used in building structures for mankind.  Footings had to be dug, measurements made, lines stretched to establish plumb, a cornerstone put into place off of which the walls and foundation would be laid.  These are all things the construction industry would do.  But how exactly would this be done on a world scale?  How would this be done for the entire universe?  It is quite a task when a man would attempt to build a home.  It could take months or years based on the size of the home or the structure.  Solomon’s temple took seven years to construct.  Multiply that times a trillion to just get things started when you think of the earth and the solar system.  But that is what God is asking Job.

This is a question impossible to answer with the understanding of Job’s day - but take a moment and consider that question in light of the Hubble space telescope.  Consider the wisdom needed to intricately lay the paths of a trillion stars and planets.  That isn’t even a trillionth of what is actually in the heavens.  Were you there when God made all of this?  Where were you?  Exactly.  You didn’t even exist except in the future understanding and plan of God - Who by the way, made it all.

What is fascinating about the four chapters in Job we are considering is that God does not use them to answer the reason behind Job’s suffering and pain.  He does not use them to explain the circumstances of Job’s trouble.  In the end what God does is to ask Job whether He is as great, eternal, wise, powerful, good, and perfect as God Himself.  That may seem like far less than Job should receive.  But Job would vehemently disagree with you on that matter.  He would rejoice in having been able to receive such a full and magnificent revelation of God.  Job’s response would be to tell us it would have been better for him to have kept quiet and trust in God.

My guess is that there are probably many who do not like that answer.  To be left without a specific why - and even more pointedly - why me - is not enough to those in a sinful condition.  They deserve more.  They deserve answers.  They deserve an explanation - even from God - to justify why He would allow such things.  In all honesty - they would eventually find that a God who does not answer the questions by which they put Him on trial - is not a God they are wanting to accept - let alone know, love, or serve.  OK - but their trial and eventual denial of Him will not remove Him from His place.  You see, God is God and we are His creation.  Just because we do not like that will not change it.  (Please understand that God is not just ultimate power and authority, but also ultimate goodness, kindness, mercy, compassion, and love.)  We often don’t get it because we are infinitesimally small and greatly lack perspective.   That is why God asks the question, “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?”

Our perspective is very limited.  It is dominated by self-interest and a heart that is bound by sin and rebellion against God.  If we truly want to understand things, we need a much bigger perspective.  When we see God through the revelation of Himself to us, our perspective changes.  When we see Him . . . nothing else matters any more.  Seeing Him is enough.  At least that is what Job would tell us.

Peanut-Sized Prayer

Peanut-sized Prayer - George Washington Carver

Lately I’ve been reading about prayer.  What has been wonderful is that the direction of the author I’ve read is not primarily a theological treatise on prayer.  It has been more of the practical work of walking with and seeking God.  The reading I did today touched on the life of George Washington Carver.  Carver did not have an easy life.  He was born toward the end of the Civil War to a family of slaves on the Moses Carver farm.  He, his sister, and mother were kidnapped by the Kentucky night raiders.  George was rescued and returned to the Carvers who raised him and his brother James.  George lived in a deeply segregated south where it was very difficult for a black child to receive an education.  Yet through perseverance He not only graduated from high school, but also graduated from what is now known as Iowa State University.  He studied botany there as their first black student, and eventually became their first black faculty member.  His thirst for learning eventually led him to receive a Master’s degree in botany where he became well-known for his work in plant pathology and mycology.  After receiving his Master’s degree he joined Booker T. Washington at what would become Tuskegee University in Alabama.

There was another side to Carver.  He was a very godly man who know the Lord.  At age 10 he had the following conversation with his foster father when he asked him about grapes.

“Why are grapes purple?” George asked.
“Nobody knows.” his foster father replied.
“Does God know?” George asked.
“Of course he does.”
“Then I’ll ask him,” George responded, and left the room.
That was the simple faith of George Washington Carver.  His foster father was amazed.  He said, "George shouldn’t talk that way.  He sounded as if he were going to meet God out there – around the house.”

Fortunately for him - and for us - George didn’t think that way.  He developed a lifestyle of prayer that stayed with him throughout his entire life.  Those who knew him said he would rise at 4 or 5 a.m and pray to start his day.  And George kept on praying like he could go around the house and meet God.

Alabama and the surrounding southern states were experiencing hard times because they were farming the ground too hard.  Dr. Carver taught farmers how to rotate crops.  He introduced planting peanuts as an alternative crop to help with this problem.  The only difficulty was that there was not a market for all the peanuts that were grown.  Dr. Carver began praying about this.  One of his favorite Bible verses was from the book of Job.

But ask the animal, and they will teach you,
Or the birds of the sky and they will tell you;
Or speak to the earth, and it will teach you,
Or let the fish in the sea inform you.

He was certain that if he prayed and sought God, that God would give him wisdom to develop ways to use the peanut.  In his own wonderfully humble words Dr. Carver related his conversation with God.

I asked God, “Why did you make the universe, Lord?
“Ask for something more in proportion to that little mind of yours,” God replied.
“Why did you make the earth, Lord?”  I asked.
“Your little mind still wants to know far too much.  ask for something more in proportion to that little mind of yours,” replied God.
“Why did you make man, Lord?” I asked.
“Far too much. Far too much. Ask again.” replied God.
“Explain to me why you made plants, Lord?”  I asked.
“Your little mind still wants to know far too much,” the Lord replied.
“The peanut?”  I asked meekly.
“Yes! For your modest proportions, I will grant you the master of the peanut.  Take it inside your laboratory and separate it into water, fats, oils, gums, resins, sugars, starches, and amino acids.  Then recombine these under my three laws of compatibility, temperature, and pressure.  Then you will know why I made the peanut.” God said.

God was true to His promise, and Dr. Carver was true to his work.  He eventually found 300 uses for the peanut.  The “National Peanut Board” reported that Dr. Carver’s labors revealed that food products from peanuts involved such things as peanut lemon punch, chili sauce, caramel, peanut sausage, mayonnaise and coffee. Then he experimented and learned that cosmetics could be derived from peanuts.  The cosmetics included face powder, shampoo, shaving cream and hand lotion.  Not satisfied there he also learned that insecticides, glue, charcoal, rubber, nitroglycerine, plastics and axle grease were a few of the many valuable products derived from peanuts.  Peanuts, once a non-cash crop, by 1938 became a $200 million industry and one of the chief products of Alabama.

One of my favorite stories about Dr. Carver is when he was allowed to testify before the House Ways and Means Committee on behalf of the United Peanut Association of America.  He was informed by chairman Joseph Fordney that he would receive 10 minutes to testify.  Dr. Carver enthralled the committee for an hour and 45 minutes about all that God had taught him about the lowly peanut.  He spoke of  shaving cream and soap, of cosmetics and wood stains, of glue and linoleum.  He even shared with the committee about Worcestershire sauce!  When he finished, chairman Fordney told Dr. Carver he could come back whenever he wanted and have as much time as he wanted.

All this from one humble man who turned to God for help about how he could use the little ole peanut.  This godly man, who turned to the Lord early each morning, was willing to listen to God as He spoke through the earth and the plants to teach him.  And what a glorious set of lessons God gave him.  Dr. Carver didn’t seek patents for all of his ideas.  He simply said if God gave them to him, he wanted to give them freely to others.  Oh, and by the way, he also learned from the glamorous sweet potato as well, sharing over 100 different uses for it as well.

Dr. Carver faced a huge, God-sized problem.  He had a multitude of peanuts - but no real profitable use for them.  Dr. Carver knew from a lifetime of walking with and praying to God - that God had a wonderful answer if he would just seek God.

“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and mighty things which you do not know.”  Jeremiah 33:3, NASB

Dr. Carver called.  God answered and told him.  Dr. Carver then used every last ounce of his learning and ability to follow God.  Amazing things happened.  Kind of astounding what the peanut-sized prayers of a godly man produced?  So - what is it that you need to take to God and humbly ask for His help with today?

Choosing the Simone Perspective   by Kirk Walden

American gymnast Simone Biles’ story is more than one of Olympic gold; it is one of perspective. So what follows below is not an argument, or an “I told you so” moment to the abortion community. It is simply one writer’s thoughts on perspective.

The life-affirming Pregnancy Help Community lives out one perspective every day. Let’s call it, “Potential,” or what we might now term, “The Simone Perspective.” Those who carry a pro-choice label, and those in the abortion lobby, carry another. For fairness’ sake, let’s call it “Realism.”

We know Biles is leaving Rio with four gold medals and a bronze, perhaps giving the world the best Olympic gymnastics performance of all-time.

The world also knows Biles’ story is an amazing one; it’s front-page news that her birthmother battled addiction issues, that Simone and her sister bounced through foster care for years, and that they were adopted by their maternal grandfather and grandmother, Ron and Nellie Biles.

We also understand that Ron and Nellie, through adoption, are in every sense of the word, Simone’s “real” mom and dad. Theirs is a story of faith, fortitude and grace—leading to Simone’s record-shattering accomplishments in Rio.

Here is where perspective comes in. Biles’ parents saw her and discarded the Realism of her circumstances, and now Simone Biles is an Olympic champion.

In the Pregnancy Help Community, we carry this idea of Potential with us into every encounter. While we understand that some children waiting to be born are about to enter our world in extremely challenging circumstances, we choose to see each and every child as one carrying both Potential and intrinsic value.    Every one.

For this reason, when the poverty-stricken, addiction-challenged woman comes to one of our centers, we are—in the world’s eyes—blind enough to see Potential in her unborn child when there is none. And, we are apparently so devoid of Realism, we cannot understand that some children awaiting their births simply have no value.

We’re not perfect in the Pregnancy Help Community. I readily admit, from my human perspective sometimes I’ve seen situations where I’ve said, “What in the world awaits this little one?”

Going further, all of us in the Pregnancy Help Community must also admit that some children born through the assistance of our centers and homes grew up in poverty and could still be in poverty. Perhaps some committed crimes.
But, perspective.

Our perspective is simple:    Regardless of what we see with our human eyes, it is not for our human minds to decide whether a child deserves a future.

We don’t force this view on those who come in our doors. But by loving, respecting, serving and assisting those we see, we joyfully offer this Perspective of Potential for consideration. It’s what we do.

Ours is clearly “The Simone Perspective.” As an unborn child, Simone Biles could have been seen—because of the adverse situation she would face—as just another statistic. A number, as in “number of children born into poverty” or “number of children born into single, African-American homes,” or “number of children in foster care.” Ahhh, Realism.

The Simone Perspective is quite different. It is a view that God doesn’t see numbers, he sees people. God knows who we are before we were even born. He formed us, and whether we can “see” it or not, He does a good job, every time.   And if we don’t see the Creator in a new life waiting to be born, that’s our problem, not God’s. We are the ones who must shift perspective, not Him.

So today, all of us in the pro-life community celebrate with Simone Biles. We celebrate with her parents, her teammates and with her. Why? Because we didn’t just start believing in her this week; we would have believed in her many years ago.

If Simone Biles’ birth mother walked into a pregnancy help center years ago (perhaps she did, who knows?), someone there would have offered a faith-filled perspective on the hope of life—even when every circumstance in the world was stacked against her and her pre-born child.

Simone Biles had courage. She had faith. She had desire. She had determination. And she beat the odds.   My gentle request to those who see abortion as a “good” and Realistic answer in certain situations is this: We invite you to celebrate with us. Join us in being so proud of Simone Biles.  But in a quiet moment, honestly consider perspective.

When a child is conceived, a choice is upon us. We can choose to see only simply numbers, statistics or—in the case of the abortion industry--an opportunity for a quick profit. Or, we can choose the “Simone Perspective” and see Potential.
I choose Potential. And I humbly ask, “What would happen if we as a nation chose to always see Potential, and chose to roll up our collective sleeves to assist, encourage and support those facing challenges as they bring a child into this world?”

Somehow, I believe if we always chose Potential, we would be better off. And perhaps, stories like Simone’s would be more common than we can imagine.

A Lot to Learn in 2016, part 2 - Decisions

A Lot to learn in 2016 part 2 - Decisions

Lot looked around and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan toward Zoar was well watered, like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt. (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) 11 So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted company: 12 Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom. 13 Now the people of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord. Genesis 13:10-13

Lot had a problem.  He did not have his own walk with the Lord. Abraham interacted with God - both hearing and speaking to Him - and Lot just followed Abraham.  There is a problem with this kind of living.  Eventually you will have to walk on your own.  What will happen then?  How will you know, follow, and experience an interactive relationship with God?  What will counteract your heart - which according to Scripture is deceitful and wicked.  This was Lot’s problem - and as we will see in this part of, “A Lot to Learn in 2016,” it does not go well for those who follow in Lot’s steps.

Abraham and his nephew Lot were both in the business of raising livestock.  When you prosper in this endeavor you will eventually have problems - and they did.  Their herdsmen began go quarrel over pasture land.  Rather than have a growing enmity between their servants, Abraham proposed that they separate from each other so that enough pasture land would be available for their herds.  This was the moment where Lot would have to make his own decisions - and the first one is indicative of a man who does not know how to follow God himself - but who relies on other people to hear God for him.

Abram offers him any of the land that was before them.  Lot got first choice.  What he chose was the land near Sodom and Gomorrah. He chooses a place where the people were wicked and sinning greatly against the Lord. He chose on the basis of what "he" saw.  Scripture says that he looked and saw that this land was “like the land of Egypt” and therefore he chose it.  In Scripture, Egypt is not considered a good place to be.  In addition to this - we also learn from the passage that the place Lot chooses is “near” Sodom.  The problem here is that we also learn that the men of Sodom were considered “wicked exceedingly and sinners against Jehovah.”  Lot’s first choice was to live by what his eyes saw and what his selfish desires wanted.  He didn’t consider that by doing this he was moving closer and closer to sin.  He did not consider that he would be taking his family into a place where there would no longer be Abraham’s godly influence - but the influence of exceedingly wicked sinners.

Lot moved his tents as far as Sodom.  The phrase used here in Hebrew means he moved “near” Sodom.  There was enough in Lot to know he shouldn’t go into Sodom - so he did the next best thing - he moved near it.  Here is a lesson we need to learn from Lot.  What you move toward in your life - is likely what you are going to become.  Having followed a godly man (Abraham) Lot now was going to have as his strongest influence, ungodly, exceedingly wicked men.  If Lot had his own relationship with God he may have done this to influence those men - but we know that what he saw was their prosperity - and the “good life” and place they lived.  There is going to be more - much more to this in our next installment.  But . . . before we go there let’s consider something in our journey together.  There is a “Lot” to learn even at this point.

What drives your decisions in life?  If our decisions are made with what we see with our eyes as our primary information - we will wind up in a mess.  If we are seeking “the good life” as defined by the world around us - we will once again wind up in a mess.  If we joyfully grab first choice in things (and don’t consider others better than ourselves - Philippians 2:1-3) and want first place - we will surely wind up in a mess.  Lot’s decisions were driven by the (1) Lust of his eyes; (2) the lust of his flesh; and (3) the boastful pride of life.  By the way, these three things are all defined as sin and worldliness in 1 John 2:15-17.  Lot made a choice that increased the worldliness in his life - and then deceived himself by thinking that only by moving “near” sin he would be fine.  These kind of choices don’t bring blessing - except in the immediate gratification of our fleshly lusts.  The long-term results of these kind of decisions - are disastrous in our lives.  Let me state this positively though - so you will have something to do on when making decisions.

First - make decisions by wisdom, which is defined as seeing life from God’s perspective.  We look at things through His Word, His Spirit, and the wisdom that comes from spiritual sight.  Don’t just seek an answer - seek Him and ask Him to give you His eternal perspective on your choices.  Second - make decisions in light of long-term (honestly - eternal) joy and delight.  Ask yourself, what is going to last?  What is going to be an eternal blessing?  What will benefit me spiritually - so that I can take it with me when I leave this world?  Lastly, make decisions that move away from sin - not toward it.  Consider the sins of your past - and the sins God wants to deliver you from in life.  Don’t move toward those things - and especially don’t think you can get nearer to them without them influencing you.  If God wants you to minister to someone or minister somewhere that is one thing - because that doesn’t move you closer to sin - it moves you closer to sinners - but only for God’s purposes of leading them to Christ and influencing them for godliness and the gospel.  A parallel question to this might be, “Am I moving toward influencing others - or being influenced by them?”  You can move toward sinners or sinful situations if the first is true - your seeking TO influence them.  But if you are going to BE INFLUENCED - you need to move toward godliness and be sure that their influence brings you closer to God.

May God help us to make good, godly decisions.  May we be wise and seek and desire His perspective in all things.  May we be seeking eternal benefit in life rather than a quick fix high.  And may we truly learn from Lot in this situation (as well as in any we face this year) that there are much better ways of decision making than the ones he chose.
