Two Paths Diverged in Life - and Taking the Wise One Made All the Difference

Proverbs 2:20-22  So you will walk in the way of good men And keep to the paths of the righteous. For the upright will live in the land And the blameless will remain in it; But the wicked will be cut off from the land And the treacherous will be uprooted from it.

One of the things that I like most about the wisdom that comes from studying Proverbs is that it both warns and encourages.  This wonderful collection of wise sayings not only warns us of ungodly ways and people — and calls us to avoid them.  It also encourages us to live positively — to both know godly good people and to follow in their footsteps.  That is what we have here in the 3 verses that wrap up chapter 2.

Earlier in this chapter we were told that wisdom would deliver us from the evil man and the strange (adulterous or sexually impure) woman.  It is wise to know what evil looks like — acts like — thinks like — and therefore know what to avoid.  But here in the wrap-up of the chapter we see that God also tells us that wisdom will help us “walk in the way of good men” as well as “keep to the paths of the righteous.”

There is a walk that the good man has.  It is a walk that here is spoken of as a lifestyle.  The word “derek” which we’ve come to know throughout the Proverbs refers to a way of walking or a lifestyle is used here.  It is referred to as the lifestyle of “good men.”  This word good is one anyone would want to be descriptive of their life.  The is the Hebrew word “tob” which means to have a happy lifestyle, a pleasing lifestyle, a loved lifestyle, and a favored lifestyle.  The good man walks in the sight of God, seeking to please and honor Him by walking in HIs wisdom, which we’ve come to know is seeing things as God sees them.  This good man experiences God’s joy, love, and favor because of this.  This is also referred to as walking in “paths of the righteous.”  This is simply walking in a path of life where we do what is right as God reveals to us what is right.  When we live this way we will experience God’s blessing in our lives rather than His punishment.

The father/teacher reminds his son of the two paths that are available for people to take in life.  This was a theme that is throughout Scripture.  We can choose obedience or disobedience.  We can choose submission or rebellion.  The two paths lay before us  as we see God and His ways.  We can either choose to live “upright,” which means to walk straight in God’s paths - not diverging from His way - OR - we can choose to be wicked - choosing a life that is unfaithful to God and therefore described as very evil.  But the father/teacher wisely informs his son/pupil of the consequences of such choices.  The evil way is pictured as a tree being first cut down and then uprooted so that there is no remnant of it around.  That is the future for the one who chooses to be unfaithful to God.  Even when we cannot see it immediately in this life, the fact is that there will be a day where the wicked will be utterly cut off for all eternity.  The one who chooses the good way will stretch out and rest in the land.  That is what is meant by the phrase “live in the land.”  The godly person will also remain in the land.  The word for remain is interesting.  It is Hebrew word “yathar” and it means to jut out over - which meant to exceed or to abound.  The word came to mean a situation in which so much abundance existed that it almost was too much.  The man who walks in godly wisdom will have so much of God’s favor and goodness in his life that he will think it almost too much.  “God You are blessing me beyond my ability to contain it all!”

Someone might say after reading this, “But often I see the ungodly seeming to prosper right now — and the godly dealing with difficult times?  If God has promised super-abounding blessing, I sure don’t see it.”  Here is where we need to grasp the eternal perspective rather than one that dwells only in the here and now.  We live on this earth maybe 70-80 years (if that long) and then it is over in this life.  The Word of God reminds us that after this life is over — there is eternity either in God’s presence or in hell.  For the wicked this means he is living on infinitely borrowed time.  For the godly, wise man this means that at the very worst — he will have a few moments of difficulty and sorrow before everlasting joy and happiness in God’s presence.  And to be perfectly honest with you - I know of people who have little and what little they have is experienced in difficulty.  Yet they know joy that cannot be measured by an abundance of stuff — or even having an easily lived life.  I also know of those who have had abundance and riches — an easy life — and who search, even in the midst of their abundance, for just a little true joy and find little to none.  To know God and the wisdom of God is far better than riches, abundance, a life of ease, or anything else.  For the light and momentary problems of this life (and remember Paul was referring to things like public floggings and shipwrecks) cannot compare to the eternal weight of glory that awaits us in His presence for all eternity.

Noah, Increasing Wickedness, Destruction . . . and the Only Cure - Proverbs 29:16

11/24/2012

Proverbs 29:16  When the wicked increase, transgression increases; but the righteous will see their fall.

There is a principle at work here - and one that has been seen again and again in the world. The more the wicked increase in a society, the more that the society will turn toward wickedness. This is not a recent phenomenon - it has been happening ever since the fall of man. In fact, one of the most powerful examples of it was not long after man fell into sin.

We read in Genesis chapter 6 of this kind of situation. "Now it came about, when men began to multiply on the face of the land, and daughters were born to them, that the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves, whomever they chose." The progression here is fascinating to see. First the wicked began to multiply. You might wonder why I think the wicked multiplied - and not the godly. The reason for this is because man is sinful - and will always orient himself toward his sin and ungodliness unless God intervenes by His grace to change things. The next step was that the wicked began to modify - and they modified God's intention for marriage. They married at will - based on something other than God's plan. This led to the wicked multiplying even more. The god-desired role of the family was perverted and rather than pass on godliness - men began to pass on and even grow in his wickedness.

We read in verse 5 of that same chapter of Genesis, "Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually." Two more things began to happen. The wicked began to magnify their wickedness. God saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth. The original intent for creation was to magnify the Creator, God. Now it was filled with men who magnified the creation, man. The second thing that happened was the Wicked began to meditate on their wickedness. Every intent of the thoughts of their heart became evil continually. God's desire was for men to meditate on Him and His Word - instead; they meditated on their godless desires - which led to even worse conditions.

The wicked then turned to mayhem and murder in their wickedness. God said the following to Noah about this in verse 13 of chapter 6 of Genesis. “The end of all flesh has come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence because of them; and behold, I am about to destroy them with the earth." James warns us in chapter 4 of his letter that the cause of our fighting is our lusts that wage war within us. This leads us to even kill so that we can fulfill our lusts that rage for more within us. The sad ending of all this is that the choices of the wicked led to the condemnation of the wicked. God destroyed that generation.

As we turn our attention back to our proverb - we see just what Solomon is communicating to his sons - and to all who would read these words. When the wicked increase, transgression among men increases as well. But in the end the righteous will see their fall. Wickedness cannot reign long in a land - it consumes it to a point of catastrophe. It did so in Noah's day - and we read that as it was in the days of Noah, so also it shall be in the days of the coming of the Son of Man. The ungodly will always be ungodly - and the wicked will seek to multiply their wickedness. But what is there for us to learn from this - just don't be wicked? No, there is a message for us today - one that will magnify the grace of God in the gospel.

How can we keep the wicked from increasing? Every time a child is born - another ungodly heart enters the human race. We are fallen - and we multiply into more fallen men and women over time. The answer lies in the gospel of Jesus Christ. This is the ONLY way that we can stem the tide of the wicked multiplying on the earth. We must multiply! We must be about sharing Jesus Christ with all who are around us. We must take the one thing that can take a wicked heart and transform it into a godly one. That one thing is the gospel of Jesus Christ! Jesus sent us into the world to make disciples of all the nations. As the early church took that mandate seriously they multiplied disciples - leading them to Christ - baptizing them as they identified with Christ - teaching them to obey all Jesus commands - and then doing it in each and every generation until the end of the age. This, and only this, can stand against the wicked and their wickedness multiplying in a society! May God give us grace to accept no substitutes in this matter - no political or social or military option, which in the end will only fail. May we see that the glorious mandate to minister the gospel - and make disciples IS God's only answer for our world!

Robbin' Dad and Mom . . . not good!  Proverbs 28:24

Proverbs 28:24  He who robs his father or his mother and says, “It is not a transgression,” is the companion of a man who destroys.   Proverbs 28:24

At first glance this proverb seems a little severe.  Who would rob his father and mother - and then assert that he had not sinned.  Yet this proverb is lived out again and again in our cities and towns as children wnat that their parents have - and resort to robbery and even destruction to obtain it.

I had the sad priviledge of watching my mother's family almost disintegrate due to a dispute about the inheritance and the dividing of furniture and possessions when the homestead was separated to the children.  This is one of the ways that this proverb is seen in our world.  A greed for and a sense of entitlement to a parent's wealth will lead children to do horrific things to their parents.  Lizzie Borden killed her father and step-mother by hacking them to death with an ax.  This unfathomable action took place because Lizzie and her sister feared that their father was about to change his will and keep them from his riches, which they had wrongly assmed were theirs.  In this way we see that this kind of greed which seeks to steal what belongs to father and mother is a companion of a man who destroys.

The other way I see this passage fulfilled is in our current drug culture.  Those who get hooked on drugs will do anything to get them.  They will even steal from their parents to get their next fix.  Often, when confronted about their behavior, the drug addict will bitterly state that they should get what their parents have - even absolving themselves of responsibility of stealing from them.  The booty they take from their parents is then poured down a hole as they buy more drugs and exhaust what they've stolen on another temporary high.  Following this sordid path has led to numerous overdoses by these drug enslaved chidlren.  Their robbery leads to their destruction.

The wise man knows that two of the commandments of God are to honor one's parents as well as not steal.  When they ignore these commandments and do as they see fit, they put themselves on a path toward destruction.  Sin in David's household led to such a demise for Absalom.  Embittered over his sister's rape at the hands of a half brother - he felt he had a right to first kill his brother - then to steal the kingdom from David - then to rape 10 of his father's concubines in front of all Israel.  His last act of rebellion was to gather an army which he himself led to find and kill his father.  All the robbery of this bitter young man was a companion of what would eventually destroy him.  Caught in an oak tree by his own hair - hanging between earth and heaven with his failed attack falling apart all around him - his life ended with a man thrusting a spear through his heart.  Oh that we would learn from such horrific cautionary history, and honor our parents.  Our parents are not perfect - but they are ones God has given us to teach us ultimately to honor Him.  To do otherwise is to put yourself in a direct collision course with the one who will destroy your life.  Therefore learn to bless and not curse your parents.  If they have failed you in some way or another - learn from the grace God has given you - and love them with affection born of mercy.

The "Scrooge" Eye - Proverbs 28:22

11/6/2012

A man with an evil eye hastens after wealth And does not know that want will come upon him. Proverbs 28:22

Greed and a heart that chases after wealth and riches - is a terrible condition to see in a man. The Bible describes such a conditioin as having an "evil eye." This phrase is actually a Hebraism which meant to be greedy about money - and very stingy about giving any of it to anyone other than himself. When a man lives this way, he has an evil eye.

Another way of stating this is found in this same Hebraism in the New Testament. In Luke we see Jesus say this about a person's eye. "The eye is the lamp of your body; when your eye is clear, your whole body also is full of light; but when it is bad, your body also is full of darkness. "Then watch out that the light in you is not darkness. (Luke 11:34-35) The "bad eye" mentioned here is said to be full of darkness. This is a similar Hebraism that speaks of the evil or the bad eye. What is interesting is that both of these passages refer to someone who is very greedy with their money. Whether in the Old Testament or the New, this condition is considered a bad one to have.

Here is the problem - when money fills our eye - little else does. Therefore we don't have our eyes on the Lord - and neither can we see past money to recognize the needs of others that should move us to compassion and a giving heart. The evil eye is hastening after wealth. The word for "hasten" here is "bahal" and it means to be in a hurry for fear or dismay that one won't get what they are chasing. The unwise man is chasing wealth. He is not just after money - he wants a lot of money. He won't be satisfied until he has a little more - and that condition will be terminal.

This man is igorant of something that is happening to him even as he pursues his money. Slowly but surely want is coming upon him. It may not be a want of cash - it may be a want that grows as he ignores family, friends, and God in his endless pursuit of just a little more. The writer, Charles Dickens gave us the unforgettable Ebenezeer Scrooge in his book entitled, "A Christmas Carol." Scrooge was a man who had enormous amounts of wealth in reference to his bank account. Unfortunately for him such a boon in his bank led to utter bankruptcy everywhere else. The visits from the three spirits who came to show him his poverty woke him up to the fact that while he hastened after wealth - want had come upon him. It was a want that could not be satisfied with money alone. That fortunate night cured Scrooge of his evil eye - yet his name lives forever in our minds as a term that speaks of a miserly, miserable heart that loves little other than its money.

May God help us to embrace wisdom as a result of today's proverb. Wisdom is to have what Jesus called a "clear eye" that is "filled with light." That light will be the Word of God that will instruct us in true riches. Those may include physical wealth - but will never be limited to it along. The true riches must always include a tender heart that yields an open hand that does not hold tightly to financial wealth. It sees such blessings as God-given, and therefore to be God-directed to those who need it most. When we live this way it is not want that is coming to us, but blessing. The blessing of having our treasure in heaven and our true riches found in a relationship with God's Son, Jesus Christ.

Pits That Wind Up Being the Pits - Proverbs 26:27

9/20/2012

He who digs a pit will fall into it, And he who rolls a stone, it will come back on him.  Proverbs 26:27

This is not a proverb that explains why bad things happen to Wylie Coyote - even though at first glance it might.  It is actually about those who plan to do evil to others.  Those who set traps to catch others and have bad things happen to them are warned in this proverb that what they do will eventually happen to them.  Let's take a look at what this means - and also see an example or two.

Those who dig a pit do so to catch someone in it.  In biblical times people would dig pits and cover them for the purpose of catching more than just animals who would fall into them.  These pits would be dug and covered with camouflage as well as wetted down on the sides so that whoever was caught in them would not have opportunity to escape.  Those who caught the person would then either take them captive as a slave - or kill the one who fell into the pit.  The reason a stone would be rolled is to be put on a steep hill so that it could then be rolled down to kill or badly injure someone who was coming through the valley.  This was a tactic of thieves who wanted to steal what travellers would have as they went through valleys and along roads that were next to hilly or mountainous areas.  The idea with a pit or with a stone was to injure or kill someone for evil purposes.

God warns that those who do such things will fall into a pit themselves.  God also warns that the stone that is rolled with come back on them.  This is not a reference to an actual pit or an actual stone rolling on them - but was a warning that God was going to hold them responsible for their wicked actions.  A good example of this would be the story of Joseph and his brothers.  The brothers threw Joseph into a pit with the original intention of killing him because of their jealous hatred of him.  Joseph and his stinking varicolored coat reminded them every day that their father loved him more than them - so why not teach the little runt a lesson.  Of course killing your brother is a little intense.  In the end they decided just to sell him into lifelong slavery (their sibling rivalry was way more intense that what I remember with my brothers).  They covered their tracks by dipping the hated coat in blood and telling their father that a wild animal killed Joseph.  But the pit they dug - and the rock they rolled was going to come back on them one day.

The first "pit-experience" was when their father almost died from grief.  Then there was the famine that came and caused them to have to go to Egypt where they had to ask for food from . . . wait for it . . . their snotty little brother who was now the second ruler of Egypt.  What was very good for them was that their brother had far more mercy on them in their pit that they had on him when he was in theirs.  They had rolled their stone on him - but he refused to roll his on them.  He chose forgiveness rather than revenge.

The varied pits that you can fall into are as numerous as the ones you dig for others.  It is amazing as I grow older to see all the various pits that people have fallen into after they've dug ones for someone else.  It is a fact of life that what goes around comes around.  That is the simple, one-sentence way to define this particular proverb.  I just hope that we all remember that the next time we grab our shovels and start digging for someone else.

Three Weapons that can Kill . . . a Reputation - Proverbs 25:18

8/30/2012

Like a club and a sword and a sharp arrow Is a man who bears false witness against his neighbor. Proverbs 25:18

Here we have a proverb concerning those who are gossips and false witnesses against their own neighbors.  This is clearly seen in the second half of the proverb.  The things described at the beginning of the proverb - three in nuimber - are compared to this man who bears a false witness agianst his neighbor.  He is a perjuror as he destroys the reputation of the one who lives near him.  Let's take a look at the three things used to describe the lying witness.

Three things are used to describe this lying man.  The first is a club.  The actual word means a maul - which is something akin to our sledge hammer.  The second two things are very easy to describe - the sword is actually a double-edged sword - and the final object is a sharp arrow.  All three of these things are instruments of destruction and murder.  Each though has its method and its pattern of destruction.  The reason that we are looking at murder here is because of the words of Jesus in Matthew chapter 5.  Jesus said there that if a man is angry with his brother he is guilty of murder.  If he calls his brother an empty-head or moron, he is guilty before the highest court of Israel.  But it if called his brother a fool, he is in danger of going into the firey hell itself.  It is a murderous thing to assassinate the character of your neighbor with your words of false testimony.

The maul or sledge hammer would be used to bludgeon the reputation of one's neighbor.  It is a slower, more grotesque death.   The lies of this man are not exactly cutting - but they are used again and again to bludgeon the poor man to death.  I've watched as these dark blows were struck toward someone.  Again and again loose-lipped men would throw ungodly accusations against someone -like the blows of a sledge hammer upon them.  The bruises inflicted by these false words would cause the poor man to be bowed down and unable to rise from the bruising of his life.

The sword refers to the words of the wicked man.  We are warned elsewhere in the book of proverbs that rash, godless words piece like a sword.  These cutting comments can be a tool of the devil to urge us to bitterness and resentment.  A sword thrust can pierce our hearts and bring so much damage.  When you consider that these sword-thrust-words are false and lying accusations - it is even worse.

The last of the three descriptive terms is a sharp arrow.  This was used to shoot straight into the heart - and break and kill it.  We are warned to lift up the shield of faith in Ephesians chapter 6 so that we can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.  Since he is known as the Liar and the father of lies, we know that he often wants to shoot us with these lying accustaions and charges.  His intent is to wound us or even more likely - kill us.  He wants us dead - and will use whatever lies he can to destroy our hearts for God as well as our testimony for Him as well.

The wise man knows of these things and entrusts himself to God to defend and protect him.  Jesus faced such things before He went to the cross.  He faced those who spoke as with sledge hammer strokes.  He faced those who sought to pierce His heart whether with a sword or an arrow.  Yet He entrusted Himself to the Lord - knowing that in the end God would vindicate him from all the false charges and lies.  Therefore, we know that if Jesus faced such things - we will face them too.  It is for this reason that we should prepare our hearts to be falsely accused and falsely charged.  A wise man knows this and prepares his heart for what inevitably will be the attacks of the spiritual realms - as well as those who do their bidding and act as their mouthpieces.

Men of Violence - and Their Horrible Leadership - Proverbs 16:29

3/14/2012

A man of violence entices his neighbor And leads him in a way that is not good. Proverbs 16:29

This proverb has to do with those who are considered, "men of violence." It would be good to understand what this title or name means before we go further in understanding this particular proverb.

The "man of violence" is an interesting term - since this term is actuially used as the name for a terrorist group or organization. The word for violence is "hamas." The word means an action of violence or wrong-doing. The word implies cruelty, damage, and injustice. It is often coupled with words that speak of physical violence involving the use of a weapon - and is also used to describe acts of oppression and violence that could be described as extremely evil in nature and intent. Keil and Delitzsch's Old Testament commentary on this verse mentions that the violent purpose behind such actions often included felonies, robbery, extortion, and even murder).

What I find fascinating is that this passage warns that this "man of violence" will seek to entice his neighbor to get involved with him and with his acts of evil. When caught this will mean that this neighbor will be an accessory to his crimes. That is why there is a warning to stay away from a man who is talking about such things.

Be careful WHO leads you - and know WHERE they are headed before you agree to go with them. The phrase, "A way that is not good," used here meand one that is in stark contrast to the good way - the way of God. We are also warned that it is altogether evil and destructive in where it goes.

One other thing I want to throw in at this point is a warning about a man who begins going down a path of anger. He will begin this path with passion and with many complaints against those whom he feels have not been fair with him. Since we are in a presidential election year - I want to offer some advice to all of us who are in the process of determining who will lead us for the next four years. I am very concerned with what our President is currently doing. There is a lot of time being spent dividing groups of people - the haves and have nots - the races - the religious and non-religious. A great deal of time is being spend whipping up a great deal of anger against various groups of people who are being painted as scape goats. No truly wise leader goes down this path. It is a path that will lead first to the marginalization of various groups - but will eventually go to the point of demonizing these groups. In the end - even violence will be permitted against these groups because they have become the enemy of a political party or candidate. This is also why I am leary of Governor Romney - and to some extent many on the Republican side of this equation. Too many are using negative attacks against their opponent - calling them names - and using political epithets that are not going to help calm our political discourse. As this verbal virtiol continues it will do NO ONE in our nation any good in the end.

A word of warning is wise at this point. We need to learn from history - that the way we are going - with men of violence starting their attacks with words - will only turn to eventual attacks physically upon others in the end. If we choose to ignore this now - we will only pay the price later when these men of violence entice us to act out upon those we think are responsible for our national demise - or honestly - our personal one. Very few of these men care anything about our nation - or else they would not turn to such godless ways. They would know that a nation divided against itself cannot stand. But then again when they turn to be men of violence they are only interested in themselves. In the end they will lead us in a way that is not good - and one that will only satisfy their own lust for power.

Wise men shun those who call for violence - in their words or in their deeds. They know that To be led by men like this is only to start down a path that is not in agreement with that of God our Father. They would choose instead to be sons of God - peacemakers if you will - whose greatest desire is to see peace exalted through the work of Jesus Christ. May God give us men like that to lead us!

Hating what God Hates . . . Proverbs 8:13

12/9/2009

"The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way And the perverted mouth, I hate. Proverbs 8:13

Hate . . . most people believe that Christians should not hate at all.  They believe that hate is a bad thing.  Yet here in Proverbs, the book of wisdom from God, we have a command to hate!  Let's take a look and see how God calls us to be a hater . . . of sin and evil.

"The fear of the LORD is to hate evil . . . here is where it all starts.  It starts with a respect and honor for God Himself.  We will never be wise until we understand that God is great - greater than all others and penultimate!  That respect, honor, and yes fear will move us toward wisdom - because what is penultimate in our lives is what will eventually govern us.  That honor and respect also means that we will hate evil.

Hate . . . This Hebrew word means to hate, to despise, to dislike something or someone and thus to be hostile toward it and loathe it.  The statement, God doesn't hate anyone is not theologically sound.  According to Psalm 11:5, God hates those who love violence.  We learn in Hosea 9:15 and Amos 6:8 that God detests and hates those who turn to evil and choose it instead of Him.  Psalm 5:5 makes is clear that God hates all those who love evil.  Rather than try to do an exhaustive study on this - let's realize at this point that God hates certain things - and yes - He hates certain people.  Here is the fact of this passage - if we honor and respect God - we will hate evil.  We will loathe and despise it with everything within us.  The proverb goes on to say, we hate several things specifically.

Pride . . . we hate pride.  Pride has an interesting root word that instructs us greatly.  The root word means to rise up, to lift up, and thus to exalt.  There is only One Who sould be lifted up and raised up and exalted.  God is that One and His interests and desires should always reign supreme in our lives.  Problem is that they don't - and we lift ourselves up and exalt ourselves as the authority in our lives.  We decide we know best - and we are adequate for life and for everything.  This is the root of pride - when we choose to exalt self above God.  This we should HATE!

Arrogance . . . this is pride in action.  Pride indicates the attitude that a person has that is independent of God - the one who thinks they can live apart from Him.  Arrogance is when a person acts upon that pride and lives in a way that no longer exalts and honors God.  We act arrogantly when we lift up our own thinking and reasoning above that of God.  That kind of action we should HATE!

The Evil Way . . . the word way is the often used word "derek" and it again refers to a lifestyle - a way a person walks and lives their lives.  Note here we've moved from the attitude of pride - to the acting out of that pride in arrogance - and now we see the fruition of many acts of arrogance in an evil lifestyle and way of living.  When we choose not to honor or lift up God, but rather lift up ourselves over and over again - we develop an entire lifestyle.  God hates a lifestyle that ignores and dishonors Him - and we should HATE it too.

The Perverted Mouth . . . This is a mouth that deviates and distorts the Lord's ways and turns from Him.  It is corrupt and deceptive speech - a distortion of what is straight and right.  When a prideful lifestyle and arrogant actions prevail in our lives - we will then justify them by speaking what is perverted.  We will justify our lives - and as we do - we will distort God's ways - and deviate from them in what we say.  Romans 1 says that the wicked not only live the way they do - knowing it is not God's way - but they also heartily encourage others to do the same thing.

God does hate certain things - and He lists them here for us to learn and to avoid.  The wise man learns these things - and realizes that one of the most foolish things in life to do is to anger and enrage the living God and embrace what He hates.

Thinking About the Furture . . . Proverbs 4:26-27

Watch the path of your feet And all your ways will be established.  Do not turn to the right nor to the left; Turn your foot from evil. Proverbs 4:26-27

Wondering in advance is one of the practices of those who are wise.  It helps us to consider what is ahead of us when we make certain decisions.  As we see the future laid out before us - and we see the consequences of our actions, both good and bad, suddenly choices that we have to make are much easier to make.

Watch means to weight out or to ponder.  The idea here is that someone is pondering evil and then choosing to avoid it.  It means to seriously think about the path your feet are going to take - and choose to take them in a direction pleasing to the Lord.  Sometimes we don't think enough about the path of our feet.  We just act and go along with our lives.  We don't take the time to think about where we're going - what we're doing - and where it is going to lead when things reach a conclusion.

We are told that if we will do this we will have all our ways established.  Ways is "derek" which again is the Hebrew word that refers to our lifestyle - the way we're going in life.  To have that way or that lifestyle established means to have it firm and fixed.  It means our lifestyle is one that is upright and good.  We will have a life that matters and just as important - one that will be steadfast in what pleases and honors the Lord.  There is also a sense in which we are being told our lives will last - whereas the worldling and the wicked man will only be temporary.

When we look at the way of our feet, we need to know not to turn to the right or the left.  This is assuming that our feet are on God's paths and ways and not our own.  When we turn to the right or the left, we are choosing to depart from God's paths and walk in our own, the world's ways, or those of the devil.  Which ever of these three are true, we will find ourselves in a way that is wrong - and ultimately a way that will hurt and cost us.

The only turn we should make in life is one away from evil.  The word "turn" here is a Hebrew word that means to go away from something, to desert it, to quit, to keep far away.  When we see evil we need to remove ourselves from it - depart - honesly - RUN!  To hang around evil is to court its greater influence in our lives.  When we see evil we should hide ourselves from it.  The longer we remain in the presence of evil, the more likely we are to participate in it.  Thus the wise man runs from evil.

Think about where you're going.  It is important to do this - to consider our lives and examine them from time to time.  It is too easy to begin to wander from the ways of God - too easy to take a path that leads us away from the Lord.  That is why this Proverb helps us so much - it encourages us to think through where our journey reaches its destination.  We think about the end of things.  When we do this - we will see the wisdom of turning away from evil and keeping clear of the wicked one and his ways.

    Proverb a Day

Each day, we'll take a look at a verse from the chapter of Proverbs for the day.  Our hope is to gain wisdom each day - and from that wisdom - to have understanding to make godly decisions in the throes of everyday life.
