Proverb A DAy

Are You a Concealer or a Confessor?  Proverbs 28:13

10/24/2012

He who conceals his transgressions will not prosper, But he who confesses and forsakes them will find compassion. Proverbs 28:13

Here is a proverb that agrees perfectly with what is said in the New Testament. We read in 1 John 1:9 that if we confess our sins God is faithful and just to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. This is the truth of 1 John 1:9 stated in another way.  Whereas the 1 John passage states this truth in the positive only, this proverb also warns us of the consequences and danger of not dealing with our sins.

The Concealer . . . First we are told about the fate of the one who conceals his transgressions. The word "conceal" means to cover - and has the idea of a cover up. This man is hiding his transgressions (word meaning a sin or rebellion - here against God and His Law and His way).  Thus the concealer is not willing to bring his sin to light before God. He therefore hides his rebellion thinking that God does not see him.  This same word was used to describe how Joseph's brothers tried to hide their sin when they dipped his coat in goat's blood and brought to Jacob.  There was an attempted cover up by Joseph's brothers which eventually came to light.  In the same way, we are warned against covering up our sins.  They will come to light - and the way this happens in by a loss of the blessing of God.

Psalm 32:5 also speaks of his particular sin of hiding and trying to cover up our sin. The Psalmist says, "I acknowledged my sin to You, And my iniquity I did not hide; I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the Lord"; And You forgave the guilt of my sin. Selah." When he was trying to hide his sin from God, the Psalmist had nothing but grief and pain.  When he faced his sin before God he received forgiveness. Hiding our sins is not only counterproductive - it is also ridiculously foolish.  We serve a God Who is omniscient.  He knows all things.  When Adam and Eve tried to hide in the garden - it was out of shame and rebellion.  The problem for them was that God could still see them - and did even as they committed the first sin.  Cain answered God rebelliously when God asked where his brother Abel was.  Cain must have thought God did not see - but he did - and Abel's blood was crying out to God from the ground.  Moses thought he could kill the Egyptian and hide him in the piles of grain - but God saw - as well as some other Hebrews.  HEre is a fact you should always remember.  We can never hide our sin from a holy, omniscient God. He truly sees all!  He warns his people, "Be sure that your sins will find you out!"

Proverbs tells us that this man who is trying to conceal his sin will not prosper.  Prosper is the Hebrew word "tsalach" which means to succeed or to be victorious.  This word has the idea of breaking out or breaking through - and has a military aspect to it.  It spoke of how an army would break through their enemies - which was a sure sign that they were about to win the battle and defeat them.  Proverbs says to us is that concealing our sins is way to ensure we will NOT PROSPER.   God wants us to confess and forsake our sin. When we choose rebellion and sin against God, we are in serious trouble.  We are facing judgment if we do not know Christ - or discipline if we do.  What we need is grace - we need God's compassion.  That is exactly what Proverbs is wanting to teach us.  God wants us to know how to obtain His compassion when we sin?

How do we obtain God's compassion and restoration?  First, we confess our sins and rebellion. What is fascinating here is the word that God uses to describe confession.   The Hebrew word is "yadah." This word means to throw towards - to cast something towards.  Here it means to throw off our sin and cast it towards God.   It means that we are throwing all our sin and rebellion to God - with a desire for Him to show us forgiveness and compassion.  What is wild is that this same word is used for praising God - meaning that we are casting our hands up into the air and casting our praises toward God.  God does not want us to try to hold our sins close to us - He wants us to cast those sins away from us and toward Him for His compassion and grace!

There is a second thing that puts us in line for God's compassion and forgiveness.  Some teach that all we need to do is to confess our sins and everything is fine with God.  That is partially true.  There is suppose to be a second attitude present.  If it is not - I do not believe the Bible says that we will receive forgiveness.  That attitude or action is to forsake our sins.  This word means to abandon, desert, leave behind, completely neglect and STOP.  When we come to God seeking His compassion and forgiveness - we need to come with a heart that says, "Please forgive me God . . . and I also want to forsake and abandon my sin."  This is the kind of heart that finds compassion and forgiveness before God.

This verse is vital in us knowing the fellowship and grace of God.  It is so important for us to grasp the call of God to deal with our sins and rebellion.  I honestly believe that just as 1 John 1:9 is such a blessed verse - this verse in Proverbs 28:13 is as well.  Oh that we would hear this and heed it as well.  It would throw open to us the door to God's grace, mercy, and compassion that we need every day of our lives.

The Abominable Sacrificers - Proverbs 21:27

7/25/2012

The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination, How much more when he brings it with evil intent!   Proverbs 21:27

When I first read this passage I thought to myself, "Why would the wicked even want to sacrifice?"  Then as I meditated on the passage and read through John Gill's commentary on it I began to see the reasons why this would happen.  This will be a very eye-opening proverb if you had the same question as I did - because at the core of the wicked man's sacrifice is his own self-deception in regard to God and the true purpose of religion and religious observances.

The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to God becasue the wicked think they can do an end run around God's law by offering it.  They walk through religious actions thinking that it pacifies God - yet allows them to continue to walk in a way that ignores His glory and disobeys His law.  One of the ways that this was done in the former (and in some places it continues to this day) days of the church was through the practice of confession and penance.  The religious person would go to a priest and confess their sins to him.  Then the priest would give them some kind of religious punishment - to recite some religious writing or saying so many times.  This would be their penance - or payment for their sinful actions.  The religious person would then recite the required things - pay the required price - do the required works - and then go on their way.  The problem was that often the religious person had no intention of stopping the actions they confessed as sin - they were just paying up to the point of the past week - so that they could soothe their guilty conscience before going out to another week of sinful choices and behaviors.

Two problems exist with this view.  First, is there is no REpentance going on in their life.  God requires repentance for His people.  They are to come sorrowing for their sins - but also with a desire to turn from them and do them no more.  The second problem is even greater - becasue no amount of human effort will ever pay for sin.  Only the blood of Jesus can do that.  Even having repentance won't work - without faith in Jesus Christ and what He did to pay for our sins by the blood He shed on the cross.  We do not need some kind of continuous religious rite to come to God at the start of each week - we need the full on gospel!  We need to turn from sin in repentance and turn to Jesus Christ as the ONLY way that our sin can be forgiven.  Then we go away from our time with God with a new heart and a new spirit - one that is not going back to its old ways like a dog to its vomit, but rather one that embraces God's ways - as they are now written on his heart.  This new man in Christ is different - and walks in the power of God and the regeneration of God to change and walk in godly paths.

The second half of this passage goes even further in what the first half says.  The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to God.  But there is even a greater wickedness, which is when they bring it with an evil intent as well.  What this speaks of is the deceived one who brings his sacrifice - but does so thinking he is deceiving even God - and can trick God into doing evil for him because of it.  We have a biblical example of this very thing in the Old Testament.

In the book of Numbers we run into two characters that baffle many of us.  The first is a man called Balaam, who was a seer - a sooth-sayer of sorts.  There was also a king named Balak who desired to hire Balaam to get God to curse Israel so that he could defeat them in battle and keep them from taking his kingdom from him.  Balak sent important people to Balaam - and eventually got him to come to him.  Balaam was a wicked man who thought God's Ok to go (after God said He would NOT curse Israel) was also an OK to make a lot of money from Balak by using a sacrifice to God to get God to do evil to His people.  After a rebuke from a donkey who acted to save his life - Balaam listened to God a little closer - and was warned to only say what God said - or what God put into Balaam's mouth to speak.  Three times Balaam offered the sacrifice of the wicked to God - hoping against hope that he would be able to do what Balak wanted - and make a fortune in the process.  Three times the sacrifice of the wicked - offered with evil intent - was turned against Balak and Balaam in order to bless Israel.  In the end, Balaam tried to destroy Israel with his wicked counsel - by getting the women in Balak's kingdom to go and commit adultery and fornication with the men of Israel.  Fortunately the godly son of Aaron, Phinehas, brought God's judgment to an ungodly Israeli man who was about to have an adulterous relationship with one of the daughters of Moab - and delivered Israel from their insanity.

There are still those like Balaam and Balak who think that they can pay God off to do what they want Him to do.  They will try every kind of religious game and exercise possible to do this.  But the end will always be the same - that God - who hates their sacrifices - will not be bought off or deceived to do things after their will.  He will instead look at their offerings as abominations - and will curse rather than bless them.  The fact is this - God is ultimate and supreme - He is sovereign and the One Whose will will be done.  It is wisdom to shun the sacrifices of the wicked - to shun the idea that we can pay God off by some religious offering.  The wisdom of God is this - to come to God as He has designated.  We are to come through the gospel of Jesus Christ.  We come not to get our own way - but rather to be transformed by an intimate relationship with God and do His will for His glory.

Staying Positive is Not Always Staying Wise, Part 5 - When God Rejects and Why - Proverbs 1:28-30

4/5/2011

"Then they will call on me, but I will not answer; they will seek me diligently but they will not find me, because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the LORD.  They would not accept my counsel, they spurned all my reproof."
Proverbs 1:28-30

There is a time when prayer will not reach God - not will it do a person any good at all.  That may sound like a strange thing to say - but it is true biblically.  God warns those who reject His counsel and who turn away from His reproof that there will be a time when they pray and find that no one is listening.

Proverbs tells us that when our lifestyle is one that rejects God's Word and wisdom that there will be a time when due to the lack of it we will call on God and even seek Him diligently.  The problem is that the reason they do this is because they want to be rescued from their bad decisions and from the consequences of their actions.  Their call to God is not made out of any desire to repent and change how they are living.  This kind of prayer will not receive God's answer - although it will receive His rejection.

The reason God rejects these kinds of prayers is because of the state of their hearts.  These are the one who hated knowledge.  They are not ignorant in human terms.  In fact often those who hate knowledge are brilliant in the world's eyes.  They just hate the knowledge that God has to offer to them.  They hate the Word of God - and they hate the things that God has to say about the true state of humanity and the true state of this world.  What I refer to is the worldview that sees mankind as fallen and sinful.  There are scholars who absolutely reject that worldview.  They see man as basically good.  In their estimation what mankind needs is not salvation from sin - but to be resuced from those who make us feel bad about ourselves and tell us that we are sinful.  They believe that if mankind was just educated properly and kept from the negativity of the Biblical view of mankind.  If mankind were not told that anything was sin - but that man could claim their basic god-ness once again - then mankind would prosper and climb to a whole new level of evolution.

This was the view at the turn of the century as mankind pretty much rejected the biblical view of sin.  The world thought it would rise to a whole new existance without war and without anything to hinder it.  What we received from this new enlightened man was a century like no other in its ability to kill one another, make war, commit genocide, and perpetrate horrors upon one another in ways that seemed previously impossible.

When men reject God's knowledge - they also choose against the fear of God.  They do not honor or respect Him - and they also do not tremble at His Word.  When men do not believe God's Word - they are destined in every negative way to fulfill it.  They truly will show the work of the fall of man in ways that will astound future generations.  Actually future generations, just as blind as their fathers, will say that these things happened because they didn't quite do it right - or because they need an even more God-rejecting philosophy.  In so doing they fulfill what verse 30 says.  They would not accept God's counsel and they spurn all His reproof.  Even as they watch the truth of God come to pass and His worldview upheld again and again, they reject it.  Blind guides of the blind, they reject the existance of the very pit into which they lead one another as they continue in their rebellion.

Please understand that I know that such writing as this is very depressing.  But it is only depressing if we continue to reject God's Word and the counsel, knowledge, understanding, and truth that comes from it.  For those who accept God's counsel there is an answer to the futility of mankind and the stupidity of his ways.  There is the grace of God in the gospel of Jesus Christ.  There is a savlation that God grants us and offers to us through His Son.  There is a hope that when we embrace God's ultimate worldview - we not only see our sinfulness - but we are also allowed to see our Savior as well.  God graces us with forgiveness, regeneration, and His ongoing work of sanctification.  We are redeemed, literally bought from the slave market of sin and given the glorious hope of heaven and fellowship with God for all eternity.

There have been and will continue to be those who scorn the negative message that MUST come to mankind for there to be hope.  They will say that it is the negative message itself that is the problem - and that if we would just rid ourselves of it - all would be well.  But they do not understand that the so-called negative-ness of that message is absolutely necessary in order for us to get the most glorious message of the ages - God's salvation through His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ!  You cannot have one without the other.  If you reject the message that we are sinners - and choose instead to spurn God's truth and counsel - all that awaits you is deception, destruction, and ultimately death.

Staying Positive is Not Always Staying Wise, part 1 - Proverbs 1:23

4/1/2011

"Turn to my reproof, Behold, I will pour out my spirit on you; I will make my words known to you. Proverbs 1:23

Can a person truly walk in wisdom if all they ever want in life are positive, uplifting messages from God?  There are those today who say that the church should not be negative - should not issue rebukes, corrections, and most of all should not dwell on the whole issue of sin.  "Let's be positive," is their cry - and when we are, people will come back to the church!

There is a fundamental problem with this view of things.  It completely ignores that whole, "fall of mankind" thing.  The reason Christianity cannot be "all positive, all the time" is because man is a fallen creature given to rebellion and walking in ways that are destructive and damning.  At some point the honest among us are going to have to address the fundamental flaw in human nature.  If men were naturally disposed to honoring and glorifying God, this would not be necessary.  But the facts are that the heart is deceitful and desperately sick - that there is none who have done good, not even one - and that unless we repent we will all likewise perish.  Man is not a naturally wise creature - unless you count being wise in his own eyes.

Wisdom is personified in Proverbs quite often.  Wisdom shouts in the streets, calls out in the square seeking to get our attention.  What does she say?  Her first words are not exactly positive.  She calls mankind "naive ones" as well as "simple-minded."  She refers to the inhabitants of this globe as "scoffers" and "fools."  The reason this does not sound positive is because it isn't.  The Bible is not into any kind of a positive confession type of tripe - instead it is honest about the condition of man.  As a result, her first command is issued here in verse 23.

Turn to my repoof.  That is her first command to mankind.  If we are going to be wise, it will require us to turn from our present selfish and self-centered ways and turn to the reproof of true wisdom.  Wisdom will require reproof - correction - rebuke.  We need to grasp that our current fleshly thinking is foolish and stupid.  Wisdom will not enter our hearts unless we first unseat the poser who sits there presently.  That is us.  We need to lay aside human wisdom and that which parades as understanding - and choose to conform our thinking to God's ways and paths.

Here is a truth that will help you gain wisdom every day.  Say it to yourself several times before you leave your home for the day.  "If I disagree with God's Word, I am wrong!"  Wisdom calls to us and tells us that something wonderful awaits those who accept reproof.  But the person who in pride refuses to admit that he is wrong - that person will remain mired in the foolishness of his own ways.

What happens when we turn to God's reproof?  Here is something wonderful!  He pours out His Spirit upon us.  Did you know that the Holy Spirit is the personification of wisdom!  He wants us to turn from foolishness - so He can be poured out upon us - and so that He can teach us.  Each time we turn from self and the wisdom of this world, the Holy Spirit is waiting to make known God's words to us.  Here is a shocker - wisdom is found when the God's Spirit is poured out on us and we come to know the Word of God.  In that moment we know wisdom.

The way of wisdom is the way of correction and reproof.  We cannot become wise until we embrace humility.  We cannot become wise until we respect and honor God's Word above all other sources of truth.  We cannot become wise unless God in His mercy pours out His Spirit and opens our minds to the truth of His words.  When this happens, we'll know the truth - and see that truth corrects us and turns us to the right thinking and the right path.  The path to wisdom may not start positive - but when the Spirit of God begins to reveal truth and wisdom to us - it surely ends positive.  Be open to God's reproof - to His correction - knowing that when we turn to Him - an abundance of truth and righteousness will be our reward.

A Pet Name - A Picture of Forgiveness - A Reminder of True Wisdom in God's Grace - Proverbs 31:1-2

The words of King Lemuel, the oracle which his mother taught him: What, O my son? And what, O son of my womb? And what, O son of my vows? Proverbs 31:1-2

Who is king Lemuel?  According to some the name was a pet name for Solomon.  Thus, this would make the woman speaking this his mother, Bathsheba.  God called Solomon Jedidiah, which means "beloved of the Lord."  Lemuel means "devoted to the Lord."  Several commentators believe this may have been a pet name for Solomon used by Bathsheba.  I love pet names.  I have several for my children (which I won't mention because it might embarass them).  Most pet names arise because of love - and most are spoken in love as well.  How this was the case for Bathsheba.

This is described as being the "prophecy" that his mother taught him.  Prophecy here is "massa" which means a burden or a load.  It was a weight that his mother carried with her all her days - and it was truths as a result of that burden that she spoke strongly to her son.  Considering what happened to Bathsheba and David it is easy to see why this would have been a burden to her.  She may have heard whisperings in the palace all of her life - whisperings that were the result of her sin with David.  Thus we can see that her burden would be to save her son from a similar fate by warning him of some things to avoid as a man - and especially as a king.  Those words come later - for now let's take a closer look at that pet name - Lemuel.

Bathsheba speaks of Solomon as her son - as the son of her womb and the son of her vows.  We can only imagine the difficulty and pain Bathsheba felt after her sin with David - and the loss of their child born of their sin.  Would God ever give her another child?  Had her sin cost her everything?  These are the words of a woman who needed to know God's grace.

Ever wonder why Solomon was called Jedidiah by God?  This means "beloved of the Lord," and was to be a sign to David and Bathsheba that this boy was dearly loved of the Lord.  What a glorious picture of grace this is to us!  And now that we see that his mother who carried him considered him the "son of her vows" it becomes even more precious to us.  It is easy to see Bathsheba coming to her own repentance.  These words may be her own Psalm 51 moment.  She knew she should not have committed adultery with the king.  She knew she should not have consented to the cover up with him - one in which she unwittingly was an accessory to the murder of her own husband.  Oh the guilt and pain that must have racked her from day to day.  Then came the death of her first child - the very child that resulted from her sin.  It would be easy to see her sinking into utter despair and depression.  Yet we see her doing this.  Instead we see her turning to the Lord in repentance and in making new vows to God to be a woman of character and godliness!  And how God accepted her brokenness as a gift and a prize.  He gave her a son - and afterward God gave him a pet name - Jedidiah - the beloved of God - for the Lord loved this child that resulted from the grace on the other side of David's sin.

Here dear saints is the wisdom for today.  Never give up on turning to God in repentance and in faith.  Never turn away and think you've gone too far.  If you do - think of Bathsheba and David.  Think of the shame and disgrace of their sin - and the cost of the child afterwards.  Then think of the name that Bathsheba called her son within the palace.  Consider that this child of her vows was a constant reminder to her that the Lord loved him too!  He heard her prayers and cries of confession.  He too loved the child on the other side of repentance - as he does everything that is birthed after we break and turn to Him.

So, if you are tempted and tried - sorely grieving your own sins.  If you struggle with whether God will receive you - welcome one so stained and damaged by rebellion and wickedness.  Think of the lovely wafting sounds of "Lemuel!" sounding through the palace.  She too had a pet name - one that reminded her of God's own name for her son.  Think of a child that God gave a name to remind you that He loved him and that He forgave you.  Think of a pet name - a name that was uttered with a smile upon Bathsheba's face.  Think of that name that reminded her that though her sins were as scarlet - God washed them whiter than snow!  That, dear saints, is wisdom - and it is also the glorious grace of God!  May He ever be praised and glorified for shedding it upon us!

Finding Compassion from God . . . Proverbs 28:13

This is that truth stated in another way.  Whereas the 1 John passage states this truth in the positive only, this proverb also warns us about not dealing with our sins.

The Concealer . . . First we are told about the fate of the one who conceals his transgressions.  The word "conceal" means to cover - and has the idea of a cover up.  This man is hiding his transgressions (word meaning a sin or rebellion - here against God and His Law and way).  He is not willing to bring his sin to light before God.  Therefore he hides his rebellion thinking that God does not see him.  This word was used to describe how Joseph's brothers tried to hide their sin when they dipped his coat in goat's blood and brought to Jacob.

Selah."  When he was trying to hide his sin from God, the Psalmist had nothing but grief and pain - but when he faced his sin before God that is when he received forgiveness.  Hiding our sins is not only counterproductive - it is also kind of silly. The simple fact of all this is that we can never hide our sin from a holy, omniscient God.  He truly sees all!

Proverbs tells us that this man who is trying to conceal his sin will not prosper.  "Prosper" is tsalach and means to succeed or to be victorious.  It has the idea of breaking out or breaking through - and has a military aspect to it.  It spoke of how an army would break through their enemies - which was a sure sign that they were about to defeat their enemies.  But what Proverbs says to us is that concealing our sins is a sure way to know we will NOT PROSPER!  We will not break through to God - we will not break through to victory - we will not break through to see strongholds and sins overcome.  And beyond that - we won't prosper spiritually period!  If this was all this proverb said - it would be great counsel - but would leave us with just a warning.  Yet God does not want us only to receive correction - He wants us to receive counsel.

The Lord wants us to confess and forsake our sin.  When we choose rebellion and sin against God, we are in serious trouble.  We are facing judgment if we do not know Christ - or discipline if we do.  What we need is grace - we need God's compassion.  That is exactly what Proverbs is wanting to teach us.  How do we obtain the compassion of God when we sin?

There is a second thing God desires here for us to receive compassion.  Some teach that all we need to do is to confess our sins and everything is fine with God.  That is true - if this second attitude is present.  If it is not - I do not believe the Bible says that we will receive forgiveness.  We also need to forsake our sins.  This word means to abandon, desert, leave behind, completely neglect and STOP.  When we come to God seeking His compassion and forgiveness - we need to come with a heart that says, "Please forgive me God . . . and I also want to forsake and abandon my sin."  This is the kind of heart that finds compassion before God.  Compassion means that God shows us mercy and a deep, kindly sympathy.

This verse is so key to us knowing fellowship and grace from God.  It is so important for us to grasp the call of God to us to deal with our sins and rebellion.  I honestly believe that just as 1 John 1:9 is such a blessed verse - this verse in Proverbs 28:13 is as well.  Oh that we would hear this and heed it as well.  Believe me, if we do, we will obtain the grace, mercy, and compassion that we need.

Thinking About the Furture . . . Proverbs 4:26-27

12/4/2009

Watch the path of your feet And all your ways will be established.  Do not turn to the right nor to the left; Turn your foot from evil. Proverbs 4:26-27

Wondering in advance is one of the practices of those who are wise.  It helps us to consider what is ahead of us when we make certain decisions.  As we see the future laid out before us - and we see the consequences of our actions, both good and bad, suddenly choices that we have to make are much easier to make.

Watch means to weight out or to ponder.  The idea here is that someone is pondering evil and then choosing to avoid it.  It means to seriously think about the path your feet are going to take - and choose to take them in a direction pleasing to the Lord.  Sometimes we don't think enough about the path of our feet.  We just act and go along with our lives.  We don't take the time to think about where we're going - what we're doing - and where it is going to lead when things reach a conclusion.

We are told that if we will do this we will have all our ways established.  Ways is "derek" which again is the Hebrew word that refers to our lifestyle - the way we're going in life.  To have that way or that lifestyle established means to have it firm and fixed.  It means our lifestyle is one that is upright and good.  We will have a life that matters and just as important - one that will be steadfast in what pleases and honors the Lord.  There is also a sense in which we are being told our lives will last - whereas the worldling and the wicked man will only be temporary.

When we look at the way of our feet, we need to know not to turn to the right or the left.  This is assuming that our feet are on God's paths and ways and not our own.  When we turn to the right or the left, we are choosing to depart from God's paths and walk in our own, the world's ways, or those of the devil.  Which ever of these three are true, we will find ourselves in a way that is wrong - and ultimately a way that will hurt and cost us.

The only turn we should make in life is one away from evil.  The word "turn" here is a Hebrew word that means to go away from something, to desert it, to quit, to keep far away.  When we see evil we need to remove ourselves from it - depart - honesly - RUN!  To hang around evil is to court its greater influence in our lives.  When we see evil we should hide ourselves from it.  The longer we remain in the presence of evil, the more likely we are to participate in it.  Thus the wise man runs from evil.

Think about where you're going.  It is important to do this - to consider our lives and examine them from time to time.  It is too easy to begin to wander from the ways of God - too easy to take a path that leads us away from the Lord.  That is why this Proverb helps us so much - it encourages us to think through where our journey reaches its destination.  We think about the end of things.  When we do this - we will see the wisdom of turning away from evil and keeping clear of the wicked one and his ways.

The Sudden Problems of a Stiff Neck - Proverbs 29:1

11/29/2009

A man who hardens his neck after much reproof  will suddenly be broken beyond remedy. Proverbs 29:1

Stiff-necked . . . now there is a term you don't hear too much any longer.  Yet, it would be wise for us to avoid being stiff-necked - especially when it comes to how we receive correction and reproof from others - and from God.

The "hardened-neck" is the one that is stiff, and it also has the idea of being severe or fierce.  Thus the hardening is very decided.  When a man hardens his neck - he is doing so with quite the attitude.  Zhodiates brings out that this means someone who is harsh with anger - cruel - stiff-necked.  This is a difficult person - stubborn and hardened and filled with resentment toward the one offering the reproof.

The reproof is not just criticism.  It is also not just a one time statement.  The proverb says "after much reproof."   There are those who are offering the needed rebuke and correction - and when they offer it - they are offering A LOT of it.  But - from the previous word - it is clear that the one receiving it is not interested in hearing it.

Suddenly speaks of something that happens all at once - there is an aspect to this that is shocking.  The promise of the proverb is not for a slow decline - but for a sudden moment of retribution from the Lord.  The one who receives this "sudden" consequences is broken.  Broken is "shabar" means to break in pieces - and also has the idea of being abolished, crushed, demolished, destroyed, smashed, shattered, or torn down.  This is a devastating breaking from God.  What is worse is this breaking is described as bein beyond remedy - literally "no healing or cure" - This is something that is not recoverable.  When I consider this, it makes me fear pride and arrogance.  It also makes me want to turn from areas where I am receiving much instruction - and much rebuke - and turn to the Lord with a humility and brokenness that is self-imposed.  Actually, it makes me want to turn in any area where I'm receiving correction - why wait until it becomes "much" reproof - respond now.  Oh to have the brokenness that comes from the Lord as a gift - the broken and contrite heart that He gives as a loving gift to His children - rather than the brokenness that comes as a horrific retribution when we resist Him and those who are sent of Him to correct and train us in righteousness.  Learn to receive correction and reproof as good friends - friends who only want us to avoid the breaking that comes with arrogance and self-centered thinking that rejects comments not meant to hurt - but meant to protect us from a stiff neck and its consequences.

    Proverb a Day

Each day, we'll take a look at a verse from the chapter of Proverbs for the day.  Our hope is to gain wisdom each day - and from that wisdom - to have understanding to make godly decisions in the throes of everyday life.
