The Extreme Danger of Messing with Widows - Proverbs 15:25

Proverbs 15:25  The LORD will tear down the house of the proud, but He will establish the boundary of the widow.

One of the quickest ways to cause God to act in judgment is to mess with widows.  By the way the corollary to this is that messing with orphans is not very smart either.  Probably the second quickest way to incur the disciplinary action of God is to be proud and arrogant.  Therefore the ones’ warned in this proverb are facing the proverbial “double-whammy” because of their actions.

The first thing we see is God’s promise to “tear down” the house of the one who is proud.  The Hebrew word for this tearing out is frightening because it has the idea of tearing out or tearing down.  God is promising the proud man that He Himself will tear him out of his home – and tear down his entire house.  The word house here is more than just someone’s domestic address.  It actually means God will destroy an entire family.  One’s house meant more than just the physical structure in which one lived.  It meant the house, the land, the businesses, the children, and even the future generations of a family.  As God has warned before in Proverbs 16:18, “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before stumbling.”  The New Testament says the same thing in James 4:6 and 1 Peter 5:5 – God is opposed to the proud – He arrays Himself as an army ready for battle to fight them.  But the reason for this warning has something more to it.  Their source of pride seems to be a house built on the backs of widows.

This proverb is a single unit – the pride mentioned here is due to the abuse of widows.  Widows did not have very many rights in the times of the Bible.  Israel stood out among other nations and other religions because of God’s concern for the rights of widows.  The right God is protecting is that of their right to the land of their family.

We need to remember that Israel was an agrarian nation – a people of the land.  The two chief occupations in Israel were those of farmers and shepherds.  To either of these groups land was indispensible.  Permanent markers measured the land that God had established when Israel was given the land.  So important was this gift of the land that God made it clear that the land was His, not theirs.  Every 50 years God decreed a Jubilee.  At this time every family would return to its land – and the land would return to them.  God gave land to them and fully expected His boundaries to be honored – perpetually.

Now we come to the second part of this proverb.  God will establish the boundary of the widow.  Since God set up the original markers by decree – to move them was a grave sin.  To move the boundary of a widow was even worse.  Some, who were arrogant towards God, would move the boundaries of widow’s land so that they could enlarge their holdings at the expense of a widow who had few if any legal rights.  To say that God would be displeased by this is a massive understatement!  He would be furious.  Destruction would come to the prideful, arrogant person who would do this.  God also would fight to establish the actual boundary for the widow.  The arrogant man who would do this would forfeit not just his illegal land grab; he would face destruction for his entire family.

So what can we learn from this proverb for today?  First of all we learn that only a very prideful (and I might add stupid) person messes with widows.  But since we don’t have the same problem of moving boundary stones among our crimes today – how do we interpret and apply this to our lives?  Second, we need to defend the rights of widows and orphans.  This is an absolute for us as Christians.  If I may add something here – we also need to fight for single moms.  There are women who were faithful to their husbands who were divorced because of infidelity or just because the guy didn’t want to be committed to his wife.  We need to stand up and defend their rights.  Unfortunately I’ve had to sit in courtrooms where horrific injustice was committed because an ungodly man had an ungodly lawyer who helped him get an ungodly settlement that left his wife high and dry.  We need to fight against such injustice.  Church discipline is one way to do this – making men take responsibility for their actions.  Another way is to learn more about those running for or being appointed to positions as judges.  Such actions may cost us in our communities – but the favor of God in these matters is worth it.

Good Things Gone Wild - Proverbs 25:16

Have you found honey? Eat only what you need, That you not have it in excess and vomit it.   Proverbs 25:16

Overindulgence is something to be avoided in life.  Here we have an admonition to be careful when we find honey.  This most likely refers to wild honey that is found in the forest areas around Israel.  It would be much like the honey that Jonathan found after the battle with the Philistines in the forest.  The counsel is to eat only what you need of this honey.  The problem comes when our desire for something sweet and tasty goes beyond our stomach's ability to handle it.  Then we will have a reaction from being too full - and we will vomit due to having an excess.  But this proverb goes beyond a dietary warning and restriction.  It refers to the problem we all have with excess in any area of life.

Having good things is profitable to us.  It is when we allow these good things to go beyond where they should that good things become a problem - and possibly even an addiction.  Moderation is wise in just about every area of life.  To moderate ourselves makes us take time to consider what we really need.  Yet, because of the fall of man into sin, we are no longer wired for moderation.  We are wired for the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the boastful pride of life.  That kind of wiring can get us in serious trouble.  When we overindulge our desires - we can build that desire into something that we no longer control.  Our desires control us.  We see this in every kind of addiction.  The addict can no longer control their desires.  Their desires control them - and dominates them to the point of being able to command them what they WILL do.  This leads to an "out of control" lifestyle - which becomes horribly destructive to the one caught in it.

The wisdom of God is to live life in moderation - especially when it comes to anything that flies in the "lust" zones of our lives.  What is good can become what is overdone.  When it reaches these levels it then can become that which makes us sick - sick in body, but also sick in our minds and our spirits as well.  Knowing this the wise man approaches all things with a desire that they remain under the control of the Holy Spirit and the guidance of Scripture.  This is how he avoids trouble that comes from fallen desires gone wild.

Signs a Culture is on the Decline - Proverbs 17:26

It is also not good to fine the righteous, nor to strike the noble for their uprightness.  Proverbs 17:26

Today's proverb has to do with the issues of injustice in a society.  By the time this kind of injustice begins to take place, a society is beginning to experience its death throes.  When what is good is called evil and what is evil is called good, very dangerous days lie ahead for that society.  It will not endure long when this begins to happen.  Then we read that is it not good to fine the righteous.  These are the godly ones who follow the rules.  They are being fined and punished by their government - which is wrongly defining the righteous and the wicked - the noble and the ignoble.

According to this passage - the righteous are being fined.  We are beginning to see this more often in our country.  People, doing what is right and good - are being fined for being successful - fined for doing what is right.  The reason for this is because the society itself is beginning to call what is good evil and what is evil good.  That is a point where the society begins a downward spiral.

Not only are the righteous being fined - but the noble and godly one is being struck simply because they are righteous.  Consider today's world in which the godly man says homosexuality is a sin - agreeing with God and what He has revealed to us in His Word.  This creates a problem with an ungodly society that says that we should not only tolerate all sexual choices – we should celebrate them!  Thus in our society we have the righteous being fined and honestly,  threatened with jail time if they continue to hold views contrary to those being forced upon the rest of the populace.  Here is where we find the righteous being fined and the noble being struck.  Consider the radical homosexual movement which has gone so far as to invade churches – throwing condoms on the membership while two lesbians passionately kiss on the stage area.  In such a society righteousness and uprightness has been redefined by the more deviant parts of society.  Anyone who holds to a biblical view of such things is labeled a “hater” or is called “intolerant” or even accused of committing a “hate crime” because of their views.

Before you think I am picking on the Gay movement – we also have problems standing for biblical morality when it comes to other issues too.  Issues like abortion, purity before marriage, racism, greed, work ethic, and a host of others also bring out the worst in our society.  Let’s face it . . . we are a fallen people who do not appreciate biblical morality.  We hate God’s ways – because we love sin.  This is why societies get to the point where they fine the righteous and strike the upright.

These are the signs or a rapidly declining cultures.  They are signs that there are very serious problems within the society.  The rotting morals of a nation have begun to  taken hold when we see the abuse of the righteous and the upright.  The proper thing to do at times like this is humble ourselves and pray that God will work in such a way to turn the society from their sinful thinking - and turn them instead to the Word of God.  What is truly sad is that often the striking of the godly is even happening in the church by this point.  Thus the first place a return to Godly principles is needed is among God’s people – the church.  Only a God-sent, God-empowered revival can rescue such a culture from these kind of things.  May God grant us such a gracious move soon!

A Breath of Fresh, Truth-telling Air - Proverbs 12:17

He who speaks truth tells what is right, But a false witness, deceit.  Proverbs 12:17

Today's proverb has a picture to paint for us about being a person who speaks truth and what is right, or a person who is deceitful and untrustworthy in what they say.  The picture that is painted for us is framed by the Hebrew word used for "speaking" that is mentioned first in this verse.  The word used here is the Hebrew word "puah" which means to breathe.  It refers to how we breathe out.  This is a word used in a poetic way in the Old Testament.  In the Song of Solomon it speaks of the day breathing.  This refers to how the shadows of morning flee at the appearance of the sun.  Here in Proverbs 12:17 it refers to the way that we speak - but not just in a specific situation.  It refers to our lifestyle - or - what kind of things come out of our mouths in every situation in life.  Of course what we see in the rest of the proverb is that we either speak truth or deceit.

There are those who speak truth and what is right.  "Truth" is the word "emunah" which refers to something true and faithful.  The primary thing being communicated with this word is faithfulness.  Through the rest of the Bible the word speaks of character - God's in Deuteronomy 32:4, Psalm 33:4, 100:5, and 119:90 - and that of people in 2 Chronicles 19:9, Proverbs 12:22, and 28:20.  When someone is speaking truth - they are being faithful in what they say.  The whole proverb says that they are speaking faithfully - and what they speak is finally defined as "what is right."  What does all this mean in the end?  The faithful man or woman declares what is right.  The word for right is "tsedeq" which is the word that speaks of righteousness - or right by God's standard.  It is an ethical word that referred to God's justice and righteousness as represented by the Law of Moses - and by the reaffirmation of God's Word by the prophets.  Here, though, is how this works out for you and me in the 21st century.

Situational ethics unfortunately rules the day in our world.  Everything is negotiable.  There is no absolute truth - except what you yourself are comfortable in holding - and even that only applies to yourself (except when you are uncomfortable with your own standards - and then you can change those too).  What is left is a society founded upon shifting sands.  But as the people of God - the people saved by His grace - we will stand out like brightly painted, fully lit up sore thumbs!  We are those who regardless of public opinion - hold faithfully to God's Word as our source of truth and what is right.  We not only believe this in our thinking - we also faithfully speak it out of our mouths.  In the midst of a world where the winds of change and compromise drive the public conscience wherever they blow - we are a biblical breath of fresh air when we speak.  To some we will be a breath of death - but to those who are being saved - it will be a breath of life to life.

At this point I am going to say some things that will most likely offend people - yet they need to be said.  Too often a statement is made like the one above - and yet people will interpret it according to their "situational ethic" mindset.  Thus what is right once again is mired in personal opinion.  A faithful truth-teller will speak up when it comes to biblical ethics and righteousness.  That means that they will speak up about biblical sexuality.  Biblical sexuality is abstinence before heterosexual marriage - followed by faithfulness to one spouse in that heterosexual marriage until death parts them.  Thus a faithful truth-teller will oppose heterosexual immorality and homosexuality, as well as their off-shoots living together outside of marriage and homosexual marriage.  A faithful truth-teller will state that abortion is wrong - in all cases.  A faithful truth-teller will openly stand for racial harmony - and will view racism as evil and sinful.  A faithful truth-teller will state that we are to oppose greed and selfishness by giving to the poor - but will also say that providing for able bodied people who can work is wrong.  Everywhere God's Word makes an statement of ethical morals - the faithful truth-teller will stand - and will speak it.  And . . . just in case a person decides to speak the truth - but not speak it in love - the faithful truth-teller will remind them that the spirit in which you say something (i.e. not like a jerk - and with grace and mercy - yet saying what is true even if the truth itself is offensive) is as important as the truth itself.

There is a second kind of wind that blows from the words that people speak.  It is the false witness who speaks deceit.  The false witness is the one who speaks lies and vanity.  The word is used of those who were false witnesses in a trial - who lied on the stand.  It refers to a person who says vain things and lives their life in vain.  There is little or no other purpose to their existance than to live for themselves and love themselves.  Their deciet is an intentional misleading of others by either distorting or withholding the truth from them.  Their deceit is evidenced by the fact that there IS absolute truth - but they will not state it or hold to it.  As offensive as some will take this - the false witness is the one who does not speak according to the ethical and moral standards held by God's Law and the entirety of Scripture.  There IS a right and wrong!  God gives it to us by His divine authority - and has revealed it to us in the Scriptures.  Not holding to this - or trying to twist it in any way - is being a false witness.

When it comes to your words - what kind of breath flows from you throughout your day?  Are you one who breathes forth deceit.  Please understand that in our culture this person is the norm.  They breathe forth the lies of our immoral and biblically unethical society.  We hear them every day on the news - in our entertainment - everywhere.  You and I are to be a breath of fresh air.  They may not see it as fresh because they have been breathing in the sulfuric lies of the pit for a lifetime.  But to speak lovingly and biblically is to speak fresh, life-giving air to those all around you.  Speak the truth.  Speak faithfully.  Speak life-giving, fresh air to all with whom you come into contact!  Be a faithful truth-teller!
