The Extreme Danger of Messing with Widows - Proverbs 15:25

Proverbs 15:25  The LORD will tear down the house of the proud, but He will establish the boundary of the widow.

One of the quickest ways to cause God to act in judgment is to mess with widows.  By the way the corollary to this is that messing with orphans is not very smart either.  Probably the second quickest way to incur the disciplinary action of God is to be proud and arrogant.  Therefore the ones’ warned in this proverb are facing the proverbial “double-whammy” because of their actions.

The first thing we see is God’s promise to “tear down” the house of the one who is proud.  The Hebrew word for this tearing out is frightening because it has the idea of tearing out or tearing down.  God is promising the proud man that He Himself will tear him out of his home – and tear down his entire house.  The word house here is more than just someone’s domestic address.  It actually means God will destroy an entire family.  One’s house meant more than just the physical structure in which one lived.  It meant the house, the land, the businesses, the children, and even the future generations of a family.  As God has warned before in Proverbs 16:18, “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before stumbling.”  The New Testament says the same thing in James 4:6 and 1 Peter 5:5 – God is opposed to the proud – He arrays Himself as an army ready for battle to fight them.  But the reason for this warning has something more to it.  Their source of pride seems to be a house built on the backs of widows.

This proverb is a single unit – the pride mentioned here is due to the abuse of widows.  Widows did not have very many rights in the times of the Bible.  Israel stood out among other nations and other religions because of God’s concern for the rights of widows.  The right God is protecting is that of their right to the land of their family.

We need to remember that Israel was an agrarian nation – a people of the land.  The two chief occupations in Israel were those of farmers and shepherds.  To either of these groups land was indispensible.  Permanent markers measured the land that God had established when Israel was given the land.  So important was this gift of the land that God made it clear that the land was His, not theirs.  Every 50 years God decreed a Jubilee.  At this time every family would return to its land – and the land would return to them.  God gave land to them and fully expected His boundaries to be honored – perpetually.

Now we come to the second part of this proverb.  God will establish the boundary of the widow.  Since God set up the original markers by decree – to move them was a grave sin.  To move the boundary of a widow was even worse.  Some, who were arrogant towards God, would move the boundaries of widow’s land so that they could enlarge their holdings at the expense of a widow who had few if any legal rights.  To say that God would be displeased by this is a massive understatement!  He would be furious.  Destruction would come to the prideful, arrogant person who would do this.  God also would fight to establish the actual boundary for the widow.  The arrogant man who would do this would forfeit not just his illegal land grab; he would face destruction for his entire family.

So what can we learn from this proverb for today?  First of all we learn that only a very prideful (and I might add stupid) person messes with widows.  But since we don’t have the same problem of moving boundary stones among our crimes today – how do we interpret and apply this to our lives?  Second, we need to defend the rights of widows and orphans.  This is an absolute for us as Christians.  If I may add something here – we also need to fight for single moms.  There are women who were faithful to their husbands who were divorced because of infidelity or just because the guy didn’t want to be committed to his wife.  We need to stand up and defend their rights.  Unfortunately I’ve had to sit in courtrooms where horrific injustice was committed because an ungodly man had an ungodly lawyer who helped him get an ungodly settlement that left his wife high and dry.  We need to fight against such injustice.  Church discipline is one way to do this – making men take responsibility for their actions.  Another way is to learn more about those running for or being appointed to positions as judges.  Such actions may cost us in our communities – but the favor of God in these matters is worth it.

Hello when will this sort of injustice end ? How long must we continue to see widows and their children taken advantage of by corruption of greedy minded individuals whom create opportunities for UNJUST ENRICHMENT for themselves and the lawyers and judges that assist in the litigation process to allow this .
Thank you for sharing on injustice to widows . I am in the midst of a legal matter where my husbands business partner took our business for himself. He and the landlord in Cibolo Tx unfortunately many untrue things were reported and I had proof to show that my husband Ronnie was a 50:50 partner and there were only 2 not three it’s a long story and I am seeking to appeal a judgement where the judge ruled I filed to late .the defendants waited 5 years to say this but it’s untrue. I filed a claim when the breach occurred in 2015 creating a cause of action to accrue then . They say it accrues on death yet I was getting deposits after we the partner and I met so initially there was no need for me to make a claim. I have also had lawyer do unprofessional things . I have asked churches to help and implement a legal ministry. There are many lawyers in churches that can give a day a month for a Free Legal clinic. There is a strong need . I’m sharing hoping this will help others as well . We pray for the salvation of the defendants and the courts .The law Tx Civil Remedies Code 16.004 say I have 4 years to file a claim from the breach , fraud and or debt etc . The judge counted from the day my husband passed and I say in that same month we had an agreement with the other partner and deposits to me started so how could I have a legitimate claim at that time . 2015 was when the breach fraud were discovered and that’s when we filed . Even though the amount was small .Should not the lawyers we hired have caught this ? I’m
Reminded of Joshua and Caleb and how they believed in God and says Yes we can take the land and I am
Believing that God will show us His glory in a major way . I ask that you pray as we move forward with the appeal. Also
I would like to let others know about a book I am
Reading by Jo Hopper a widow in Texas who won a Big settlement against JP Morgan Chase it’s called RIP Robbed In Probate . Let’s all ban together and yes help single moms to and their children
God Bless You

I am a recent widow. As I was reading proverbs 15...my husband's Bible it was underlined vs. 15:25 but he will establish the border of the widow. PTL...I am just about to enter into what's legally mine...please pray for me for wisdom and understanding.
Thankyou

This scripture hits home for me personally . My husband past away . and shortly after that a neighbor died that would constantly move and remove the property flags on my property . I had previously paid a surveyor multiple times to find them

Thank you for this, you are kind to make it available to the public.
I knew this scripture before and as my husband was older than I, found it a comfort for years that God would protect me when he was gone.
However, very recently my daughter who is co -purchasing our home with me, (a widow of a Christian man since 2017) met a Christian man who said he had just rededicated his life to God. They met on eharmony.com and since have been talking by phone and decided after one date to get engaged and married. They decided he should spend every night here, even though he has his own apartment in the city where he works.
I was not happy about even engaged people of a more mature age spending the night together or about having a stranger suddenly move into my home.
He has been here every night for 2 weeks now and gets up to drive an hour and a half to work each morning, but leaves his apartment to come and eat dinner and spend the rest of the night at our house.
I have begged them to consider my feelings and give me a chance to adjust by having him here only on weekends until the wedding.
They ganged up on me and told me it is 2024 and people move in together all the time and then that weekends were not enough and they need to be together all the time.
She has two young sons who are seeing this example.
They attend church every Sunday morning as if they are committing no sin and read the Bible.
They say I am wrong to need time to adjust to a man I just met a few weeks ago being in my home constantly, and that I am an unreasonable old woman who is letting the devil use me to try to keep them apart.
I am claiming this scripture even though my daughter is co owner of the home.
I had sold my home that my husband left me so my daughter could get a better job in this new area. Even after much prayer, I thought it was the right decision for us, but now am wishing I hadn’t.
I don’t understand why they won’t be a little more considerate and give me time to know her fiancé before the wedding. My sister thinks I am being reasonable about this.
Only my daughter and her fiancé refuse to understand and she has actually told me to leave and go to my bedroom.
Of course this has led to conflict, because I keep struggling not to be bullied in my own home!
Does anyone have wise advice for me?
I feel lost, blindsided, and helpless, even though I’m trying to trust God and clam lots of scripture!

First of all, I would pray about the situation and ask God to give you wisdom. Secondly, I would seek counsel From a pastor Or someone who knows the scriptures and believes God word is the same yesterday and forever. They cannot change scripture just because it’s 2024 people do it all the time.

Once you’ve sought counsel, if that person is willing to be mediator, I would call meeting between your daughter and you, If you feel comfortable having her fiancé there, then I would do that also.
You are co-owner of that house and she has no right to tell you to go to your bedroom at all. You’re not her child and she’s called by the word of God to respect and honor her
Parent.
Hopefully, if you have a good Christian council, it will It will help
You mentioned that your daughter is co. purchasing the house with you, If you have not finalized this purchase, do not do it
If you have to purchase something smaller for yourself. When you purchase it, you can put it in trust for her, but you would still be the sole owner of it
I hope that helps. I will keep you in my prayers.
