The Intoxication God Encourages - Proverbs 5:19

1/11/2013

Proverbs 5:19   As a loving hind and a graceful doe, Let her breasts satisfy you at all times; Be exhilarated always with her love.

In talking about moral sanity we come to a passage that almost makes you a little uncomfortable while reading it, yet it is the very essence of moral and sexual sanity itself! In commenting on this verse I want to take a moment to speak against the moral and sexual insanity that reigns in our society today.

It is a sad thing that we read verse 19 and get a little uncomfortable. The joys of married love and sexual union are one of the wonderful gifts that God gave us when He made our bodies as He did - and introduced us to marriage at the very foundation of this world. There is a purity in what is said here - not impurity. There is a very real joy that we should have in experiencing sexual union with the wife of our youth. Unfortunately sin has so skewed things in our minds that we squirm a little when God paints a somewhat vivid picture of the truth.

God desires for a man to enjoy his wife. He tells us here that her breasts should be the ones that satisfy us at all times. The world though has so twisted our minds and hearts that we struggle with reading this - even though all the world around us is doing all they can to capture our attention with the breasts of women other than our wives. There is the perversion - focusing on the beauty of a woman who is NOT your wife. Television, movies, magazines, and the internet are being used to draw our attention to other women. I see pretty much every day when I go to check my email that the most popular searches on the internet tend toward women whose beauty is being exploited to draw men into the trap of desiring a woman other than their wife. This is the deception of the world - and it is used daily to draw us away from the Lord. That is why I get so frustrated when believers don't want us to read or comment on passages of Scripture that promote healthy biblical sexuality. It is not that we want to start a sexual round-table by doing this - but it does put the real and the true before us. We want to be wise in discussing and commenting on such passages - not turning to gutter language and sexually explicit comments. But the Bible is very clear in what it is saying here.

The second part of this admonition from father to son is that the son be intoxicated by the love of his wife. Usually the New American Standard does a wonderful job of directly translating such things, but my how weak they are on this verse. Exhilarated is NOT what the dad is saying to his son. He is telling him to be utterly intoxicated with the sexual love of his wife. There are not many things God says we should be drunk on - but when it comes to the love of our wife - God says to drink up all the love we can.

That is the essence of sexual sanity dear friends. God wants us to enjoy our sexuality in marriage. He has written an entire book, The Song of Solomon, to exult in the sexual love enjoyed in marriage. He instructs us in that book - as well as in this passage - that it is a good thing to enjoy sexual union and lovemaking with our wife. It is one of the reasons why he gave us a wife and set up marriage the way He did. That is why it is so important that as fathers we have such a talk with our sons. We can guide them away from the raging rapids of sexual immorality - and toward the safe waters of sex within marriage. If we do not tell them - I can promise you the world will warp their minds with tales of sexual exploits that are nothing more than the deception of whoremongers and fools.

Staggering into the Gaping Jaws of Sexual Destruction - Proverbs 5:6

Proverbs 5:6  She does not ponder the path of life; Her ways are unstable, she does not know it.

Here is another in a list of warnings given to the man who would think of committing adultery. It is part of the description of the adulteress. Before I go into this particular verse I do want to make a comment or two for the ladies. This passage does describe for us the woman who either leaves her husband to have sex with another man - or a single woman who enters into relationships with married men and thus is committing adultery with him. I do not in any way want you ladies to think that any man is receiving a pass here. This passage is dealing with this issue from the perspective of a warning to sons. Fascinating that this warning comes most likely from David to Solomon - two guys who learned much from the wrong side of this issue. David's warnings to his son Solomon were for the most part unheeded in the end - and Solomon's sin was the undoing of Israel. So you can see that the cost of mistakes in this area are great. Fortunately for us - the grace of God and His forgiveness are greater. Nevertheless - a whole host of problems come when a young man is foolish enough to be ensnared by the adulteress. Oh, and ladies . . . the greatest snare for him is not the woman herself - but his own lusts that wage war in his soul. His greatest battle is with godly self-control, obedience to the Scriptures, and not living out of his flesh as a source.  But, with all this said, it is a wise father who speaks to his son about these issues - even if it is from hard lessons learned.

The adulteress, like anyone who is willingly cooperating with sin, is not watching for eternal things. The passage states in the Hebrew that she is not watching the path of life. The actual Hebrew word here is "palas" and it means to ponder or to calculate the weight of something. One of the ways this word is used is to weigh out a path and see what it will bring to us in the end. The adulteress is not thinking about eternity - about the judgment of God at the end of life when according to the Bible, all men and women will have to give an account of their choices and actions. The word "ponder" here does not mean just a casual thought - but to stop and think seriously about something. She is not thinking about where her actions are taking her. This is kind of a "duh" statement considering we just read a verse earlier that her feet are swiftly moving towards death and her very steps (indicating a direction taken) are taking hold of the place of the dead. Think about this for a moment. Does anyone who is entering into sexual immorality seriously stop and think about the diseases they are opening up to in their lives? Does anyone entering into adultery seriously stop and consider the havoc coming in their marriage - in their family - in their children's lives? There is not a lot of pondering going on here. Honestly, what IS going on is actions based on lust and desire. Sexual immorality usually involves shutting the "ponderer" down and living by the impulses of our flesh instead.  It involves shutting down our brain and our spirit - and thinking with our loins instead.

The adulteress also is unstable. The word for unstable here means to stagger and walk crooked. It has the idea of someone who is swaying in and out of a path. Rather than ponder and consider the path of life - she is wandering and staggering off the road. Jeremiah 14:10 uses this same imagery to indicate that there are those who love their wandering. God told Jeremiah, "Thus says the LORD to this people, 'Even so they have loved to wander; they have not kept their feet in check. Therefore the LORD does not accept them; now He will remember their iniquity and call their sins to account."' This is the same sentiment we sing about in the hymn, "Come Thou Fount" when we say, "prone to wander, Lord I feel it; prone to leave the Lord I love."

This speaks of a "willful" wandering. The adulteress though, is wandering not toward sin with the assurance of God's gracious discipline. She is willfully wandering toward a yawning abyss without seeing its gaping jaws. Her ways are unstable - wandering - staggering toward destruction - but she does not know it. So although she promises so much through her offer of pleasure, albeit illicit. She does not know even herself where it is eventually leading.  For the man foolish enough to be attracted to her wiles and follow her into sin - he simply is walking hand in hand with her to that yawning abyss with its gaping jaws - so step in and be devoured.

Pretty scary description here isn't it? That's the point that David is trying to drive home to young Solomon his son. Remember, David wound up killing Uriah as well as several other soldiers by proxy - had his daughter raped by one of her half brothers - had that son killed by another son (who used his proxy methods to accomplish the deed) - had 10 of his concubines raped in public by his son on a rooftop in front of the entire nation - and had that son die in an effort to usurp the kingdom along with all the soldiers who fell in that battle as well. Kinda cost David far more than he thought to have that one night of hidden passion? Maybe David wanted Solomon to ponder more than he did - to avoid a similar fate? Maybe whether from success or failure in our moral lives we should do the same with our sons and daughters as well?

Paying Attention to God . . . When Distractions Abound - Proverbs 16:20

2/22/2012

He who gives attention to the word will find good, And blessed is he who trusts in the LORD.
Proverbs 16:20

Ever have problems paying attention to something? This is a common problem with just about everyone I've ever known. Many of us are avid day-dreamers who take excursions all over the world - or at least all over the recesses of our minds - every day. The problem is when distracted thinking affects how we approach and deal with God's Word and what the Lord is trying to say to us in our daily quiet time.

Today's proverb has excellent advice for those who want to be wise. Pay attention to what God is saying to you in His Word! That is the advice. Simple isn't it. Yet anyone who has ever had a quiet time go awry knows that simple in stating and complicated in obeying is the problem here. I've had quiet times where I spent the majority of my time turning down dog-eared pages in my Bible. I've had other ones where I will finish reading a chapter and wonder what is the world I just read. At other times I've been reading a chapter and been horribly distracted with thoughts poking themselves into my mind between every verse. All this can be downright frustrating at times!

Giving attention to God's word means that we do more than just read over it. The word for attention means to consider something. To place our entire attention toward it also is part of what this word means. Distractions are normal, but when they come we need to stop reading and deal with them. Otherwise we will be in danger of just reading over words - without truly paying attention to them.

Giving attention to the Word also means taking a little time to consider, meditate, and learn from it. I've been guilty in the past of just wanting to read a lot of the Bible - and not think on what I am reading. This particular blog was a way of battling that problem. Writing these posts have made me slow down and truly consider what a verse means. Consider keeping a quiet time journal where you can focus on one verse, or a few of them. That will help you pay attention to what God is saying to you.

The blessing that comes from this is that you will find good. The good that you will find is varied. Some days you will find a promise in God's Word that you can claim. Other days you will find instruction or teaching about some aspect of God or His will. On others you will experience rebuke or correction that will lead you away from a sin and back into sweet fellowship with the Lord. Still others will yield a fresh glimpse of God's glory and character that will blow you away or thrill your heart. There is so much good that comes from approaching the Word as more than just something to check off on your day. You need to approach it as you would approach Him - because that is exactly what you are doing!

There is another blessing that comes from doing this as well - and it is explained for us at the close of this proverb. You will be blessed because as you understand God's will and ways and person better - you will be able to trust in Him! When He gives a command you can trust Him to provide the power to keep it. When He offers rebuke or conviction you can trust Him to grant repentance and to lead you into freedom from the sinful action. When He offers hope or encouragement you can trust Him to bring you through the situation which has caused hurt or pain. There are so many ways that God can make you truly blessed as you have a fresh opportunity to trust Him and rely upon what He has said in His Word. May you be blessed indeed as you continue having daiily times alone with Him - as He speaks to you - as you pay attention - and as you are wonderfully blessed as He encourages you onward into every new day of trusting Him and seeing Him work out His will in your life!

Moral "Keep-away" Proverbs 5:8

7/5/2010

Keep your way far from her And do not go near the door of her house, Proverbs 5:8

For many, the reason that they fail and fail again in conquering sexual sin is because they are trying to walk as close as they can to the line rather than walking miles from seeing it.  Let me explain as we look at today's "little bit of wisdom."

Solomon is giving his son great advice here concerning the immoral woman.  He is told to keep his way FAR from her!  He tells his son not to go near to the door of her house!  What great wisdom he offers here - and yet it is as simple as a child learning their first letters.  The problem is that too many ignore this advice - and do so to their own demise.

FAR - there is the definitive word that we need to remember when it comes to avoiding sexual sin.  What usually happens is that a young man wants to go as close as he can to sin - without actually stepping into it.  He walks the line between sin and righteousness like someone walks a tight rope.  The result of this choice on his part is that he sins - and does so fairly regularly.

Here is a truth and wisdom you need to remember when it comes to sexual sin - and hanging around the wrong kind of women or men.  If you want to walk as close as you can to sin - you will sin.  You are destined to fall if your goal is to stay close to the edge of sin.  David knew this when he instructed Solomon in this very same information.  David understood this all too well.

David should have never been in Jerusalem when he committed adultery with Bathsheba.  The Scriptures tell us that when kings went to war . . . David chose to stay home.  This presents a very dangerous situation for David.  First of all, David is not where he should be - fighting for Israel and engaging the Lord's enemies.  So our first lesson is this - if sin is our enemy, why would we want to get as close to it as we can?  If David would have been where God wanted him to be - he would have never faced temptation in the first place.

David's actions had consequences.  Now he was a man in a city filled with women whose husbands were away at war.  Where there would have been a natural protection afforded to David by the presence of Bathsheba's husband - that was not the case.

When David was walking on the roof of his house and saw Bathsheba bathing - he could have walked away and gone back into his palace.  Instead he chose to look - and to note that she was a beautiful woman.  Each time David decided to walk on the edge of where God wanted him to be - and what God wanted him to do - David was ensuring that he was going to eventually fall off that edge headlong into sin.  Eventually, David succumbed to the desires that were raging in his heard.  Even though he had a palace filled with wives - and probably by this time concubines - he had to have this woman.  The rest is a sad and sordid history.

But enough about David - how about us?  Where are we walking in these matters?  Are we steering clear of sin - especially sexual sin.  I know of men who have stumbled again and again into pornography and other sexual sin - who grieve over their failures.  But they are unwilling to get a filter - unwilling to submit to accountability - and many think they can continue to get as close to sin as possible rather than run from it.

If you want to know the answer to all this - it is to follow Solomon's counsel here - and keep away from the immoral woman - or wherever you are seeing her image or pictures.  If anything our heart's desire needs to be a desire to get as close to JESUS as we can!  That is what needs to drive us in our hearts.  We need to have a heart that says - not only do I want to keep away from her and steer clear of the door of her house.  I want to do just the opposite - to keep as close as I can to Christ - and to often go near Him.

If you want to avoid sexual sin - then AVOID IT!  But in avoiding it, don't think inches or millimeters.  Think miles and miles!  By staying away from the source of temptation - we will find our hearts wonderfully protected as we instead draw near to our Lord Jesus Christ!

Filling Our Minds with Noble, Right Things . . . Proverbs 8:6

3/8/2010

"Listen, for I will speak noble things; And the opening of my lips will reveal right things. Proverbs 8:6

Why should we listen to the voice of wisdom when the Holy Spirit speaks to us?  It is because unlike anything else in this world - when He speaks wisdom to us - it is a noble and a right thing we will hear - and hopefully receive.

Our society is devolving every day.  This is true because of the 2nd law of thermodynamics.  But it is also true morally.  Due to the fall and our propensity to sin - we gravitate to things that are not noble or right.  Consider for a few moments the direction of the movie and television industries.  When these mediums came out - the programming was primarily good and wholesome.  But as time progressed writers and directors wanted to "push the envelope."  what is interesting is that by pushing the envelope, they did not mean challenging people with godly morals and values.  They meant that they were wanting to use foul language.  What began as one curse word at the end of "Gone With the Wind" became movies so filled with profanity that we had to devise a rating system to protect our children from it.  When started as moving a married couple into the same bed in the early sixties - has run headlong into every kind of heterosexual and homosexual immorality with a thirst for more.  What started as allowing a little violence has descended into the most gruesome and disgusting ways of using special effects to depict the bloodiest butchery.  We don't gravitate toward what is noble and good.  Sure, we have the occasional movie where we see nobility and goodness - but they are definitely the exception and not the rule.

When the Holy Spirit speaks God's wisdom to us - we will hear Him speak noble things.  The word noble (nagiyd) means just what it says - nobility, a ruler, a prince or a king.  It refers to the most noble of statements.  We are not going to hear gutter language from the Holy Spirit - we will hear the most noble of statements.  These will be things that will call us higher into the very nobility of God's character and ways.  The Holy Spirit will lead us into noble action that will glorify God and do what is best for His creation.  This is especially true for what we will do for each other.

The other thing we will hear when God speaks His wisdom to us is "right things."  It is interesting that the passage says that He will "reveal" right things to us.  The "right" way is not natural to us.  There are those who in their ignorance tell people to just follow their hearts.  The problem with this counsel is that our hearts are deceitful and desperately sick.  They are given to doing that which does not please God - or doing the supposed right thing with the wrong set of motives.  We need God's wisdom - which will reveal to us the "right things" that we should do.  We need revelation in order to get wisdom.  We won't get it searching within our own hearts.  But if we will listen to the Lord.  If we will go to God's Word and read and study it with the help of God's Spirit - we will know the right thing to do.  Oh, one other wonderful thing about this is that we will also be able to DO the right thing too.

When God wants to give you wisdom - Listen!  It is the best way to fill your mind and heart with noble thoughts - and with right actions.
