The Extreme Danger of Messing with Widows - Proverbs 15:25

Proverbs 15:25  The LORD will tear down the house of the proud, but He will establish the boundary of the widow. 
 
One of the quickest ways to cause God to act in judgment is to mess with widows.  By the way the corollary to this is that messing with orphans is not very smart either.  Probably the second quickest way to incur the disciplinary action of God is to be proud and arrogant.  Therefore the ones’ warned in this proverb are facing the proverbial “double-whammy” because of their actions. 
 
The first thing we see is God’s promise to “tear down” the house of the one who is proud.  The Hebrew word for this tearing out is frightening because it has the idea of tearing out or tearing down.  God is promising the proud man that He Himself will tear him out of his home – and tear down his entire house.  The word house here is more than just someone’s domestic address.  It actually means God will destroy an entire family.  One’s house meant more than just the physical structure in which one lived.  It meant the house, the land, the businesses, the children, and even the future generations of a family.  As God has warned before in Proverbs 16:18, “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before stumbling.”  The New Testament says the same thing in James 4:6 and 1 Peter 5:5 – God is opposed to the proud – He arrays Himself as an army ready for battle to fight them.  But the reason for this warning has something more to it.  Their source of pride seems to be a house built on the backs of widows.
 
This proverb is a single unit – the pride mentioned here is due to the abuse of widows.  Widows did not have very many rights in the times of the Bible.  Israel stood out among other nations and other religions because of God’s concern for the rights of widows.  The right God is protecting is that of their right to the land of their family.
 
We need to remember that Israel was an agrarian nation – a people of the land.  The two chief occupations in Israel were those of farmers and shepherds.  To either of these groups land was indispensible.  Permanent markers measured the land that God had established when Israel was given the land.  So important was this gift of the land that God made it clear that the land was His, not theirs.  Every 50 years God decreed a Jubilee.  At this time every family would return to its land – and the land would return to them.  God gave land to them and fully expected His boundaries to be honored – perpetually. 
 
Now we come to the second part of this proverb.  God will establish the boundary of the widow.  Since God set up the original markers by decree – to move them was a grave sin.  To move the boundary of a widow was even worse.  Some, who were arrogant towards God, would move the boundaries of widow’s land so that they could enlarge their holdings at the expense of a widow who had few if any legal rights.  To say that God would be displeased by this is a massive understatement!  He would be furious.  Destruction would come to the prideful, arrogant person who would do this.  God also would fight to establish the actual boundary for the widow.  The arrogant man who would do this would forfeit not just his illegal land grab; he would face destruction for his entire family.
 
So what can we learn from this proverb for today?  First of all we learn that only a very prideful (and I might add stupid) person messes with widows.  But since we don’t have the same problem of moving boundary stones among our crimes today – how do we interpret and apply this to our lives?  Second, we need to defend the rights of widows and orphans.  This is an absolute for us as Christians.  If I may add something here – we also need to fight for single moms.  There are women who were faithful to their husbands who were divorced because of infidelity or just because the guy didn’t want to be committed to his wife.  We need to stand up and defend their rights.  Unfortunately I’ve had to sit in courtrooms where horrific injustice was committed because an ungodly man had an ungodly lawyer who helped him get an ungodly settlement that left his wife high and dry.  We need to fight against such injustice.  Church discipline is one way to do this – making men take responsibility for their actions.  Another way is to learn more about those running for or being appointed to positions as judges.  Such actions may cost us in our communities – but the favor of God in these matters is worth it.

The "Overtaxation" Proverb - Proverbs 28:16

 A leader who is a great oppressor lacks understanding, But he who hates unjust gain will prolong his days. Proverbs 28:16

When a leader becomes an extortioner either through bribes or through taxation - he is not a wise leader at all. Today's Proverb has to do with governing officials and how they receive the money with which they work - and by which they are paid.

We are presented with a leader who according to Solomon is a "great oppressor." The word "oppressor" is very interesting because it, along with the second half of this proverb, opens up the meaning for us. The Hebrew word is "masaqqot" and it means one who oppresses by extortion. Zhodiates' dictionary defines this word this way, "It indicates a leader abusing his people by forcing them to pay money or contribute goods against their will. This he then uses to enrich himself and those ruling with him.

An unwise leader is one who decides that the money of the people he rules is his money. It belongs to the government - and therefore to him and those who serve with him. There are numerous instances where government leaders tax their people - and use that money to enrich themselves. They also use it to enrich those who support them - making sure that anyone who is their friend, supporter (or in our society, voter, campaign contributor) is rewarded richly for their efforts. In the times of kings this group was their nobles and knights - in today's society it is donors and voters. God allowed for His people to be taxed for the purpose of their governmental leaders. He also warned the leaders not to oppress His people by taxing them exorbitantly. Bribes also were expressly forbidden by God. The proverbs are filled with wisdom that promotes hard work and labor so that we can be blessed and become more and more financially blessed by it. Nowhere in Scripture does God encourage government to take confiscatory taxes from the people and redistribute it to those whom the government desires to bless.

We are told that any leader who does this kind of thing is lacking understanding. To understand something meant that you had gathered data together and were putting the pieces together so that you got a much bigger picture of things. In the context in which we find this proverb we are speaking of God's wisdom and knowledge being gathered so that we have an understanding of things beyond that of just this earth. It is seeing far enough into the future to make a wise decision and follow wise actions. The financially oppressive leader truly lacks any vision into the future.

Government leaders have authority - but it is high level authority to lead and serve people as God would have them go. Their role, like any other is to serve the people - and bless them with how they lead a nation. Unfortunately for some people, their leaders see their authority and misuse it to get rich or to stay in authority by oppressing the people with ridiculous, oppressive taxes. The king and his officials live lavishly off the people's money - and care little for the plight of the average man. They think the tax money of the people is their own to use as they see fit. They then see fit to line their pockets and their supporter's pockets. Often this is done as the rest of the nation suffers under the load of larger and larger taxed amounts.

We are told that the one who hates this kind of unjust gain will prolong his days. Two things we see here. First, God calls this kind of ungodly confiscation of the goods of hard working people "unjust." It is not good - and God does not approve of it. Second, we see that this kind of activity in government will not last long. The people will inevitably rise up and call for this to stop! History has shown that leaders who oppress their people with extortionary taxes will eventually be overthrown. Kings and queens have been beheaded - dictators overthrown, and elected officials voted out of office because they were making themselves rich on the people's taxes. Unfortunately for us, we've watched over the years as our leaders on both sides of the aisle have voted themselves to wealth and to pensions that are beyond imagination - while taxing us out of more and more of the money we earn. Over the past four years alone - the Washington D. C. area has grown in wealth and luxury, while the populace is either given the wealth of others through taxation - or taxed barren to provide such things.

As I studied this passage - and looked over history - I saw again and again leaders who loved their unjust gain. This was the case whether the government was a monarchy or a representative republic like our own. Men are greedy and want to be rich. They will do so even while falsely championing the "little guy" in their speeches. The one thing that we can be sure of though is that these governments will not long endure. They will fall just like all the others have over the years who have oppressed their people with their taxation and schemes to be rich on the people's dime.

Pits That Wind Up Being the Pits - Proverbs 26:27

He who digs a pit will fall into it, And he who rolls a stone, it will come back on him.  Proverbs 26:27
 
This is not a proverb that explains why bad things happen to Wylie Coyote - even though at first glance it might.  It is actually about those who plan to do evil to others.  Those who set traps to catch others and have bad things happen to them are warned in this proverb that what they do will eventually happen to them.  Let's take a look at what this means - and also see an example or two.
 
Those who dig a pit do so to catch someone in it.  In biblical times people would dig pits and cover them for the purpose of catching more than just animals who would fall into them.  These pits would be dug and covered with camouflage as well as wetted down on the sides so that whoever was caught in them would not have opportunity to escape.  Those who caught the person would then either take them captive as a slave - or kill the one who fell into the pit.  The reason a stone would be rolled is to be put on a steep hill so that it could then be rolled down to kill or badly injure someone who was coming through the valley.  This was a tactic of thieves who wanted to steal what travellers would have as they went through valleys and along roads that were next to hilly or mountainous areas.  The idea with a pit or with a stone was to injure or kill someone for evil purposes.  
 
God warns that those who do such things will fall into a pit themselves.  God also warns that the stone that is rolled with come back on them.  This is not a reference to an actual pit or an actual stone rolling on them - but was a warning that God was going to hold them responsible for their wicked actions.  A good example of this would be the story of Joseph and his brothers.  The brothers threw Joseph into a pit with the original intention of killing him because of their jealous hatred of him.  Joseph and his stinking varicolored coat reminded them every day that their father loved him more than them - so why not teach the little runt a lesson.  Of course killing your brother is a little intense.  In the end they decided just to sell him into lifelong slavery (their sibling rivalry was way more intense that what I remember with my brothers).  They covered their tracks by dipping the hated coat in blood and telling their father that a wild animal killed Joseph.  But the pit they dug - and the rock they rolled was going to come back on them one day.
 
The first "pit-experience" was when their father almost died from grief.  Then there was the famine that came and caused them to have to go to Egypt where they had to ask for food from . . . wait for it . . . their snotty little brother who was now the second ruler of Egypt.  What was very good for them was that their brother had far more mercy on them in their pit that they had on him when he was in theirs.  They had rolled their stone on him - but he refused to roll his on them.  He chose forgiveness rather than revenge.  
 
The varied pits that you can fall into are as numerous as the ones you dig for others.  It is amazing as I grow older to see all the various pits that people have fallen into after they've dug ones for someone else.  It is a fact of life that what goes around comes around.  That is the simple, one-sentence way to define this particular proverb.  I just hope that we all remember that the next time we grab our shovels and start digging for someone else.

Economics - Biblical Style! Proverbs 11:26

He who withholds grain, the people will curse him, But blessing will be on the head of him who sells it. Proverbs 11:26

Today's proverb is fascinating to me because it addresses an abuse that often happens in the area of economics. This abuse, though a proven way to make money, results in the inflation of prices for food.  What has happened over the course of economic history is that when this is done - and it reaches a critical level in food prices - it leads to riots and in some cases the overthrow of a government. 

Our proverb speaks of one who has much grain.  Here is a man who has worked hard and labored to produce a crop on his farm.  As a result he has a large amount of grain.  He can choose to withhold grain from the people and not sell it.  By doing this he will drive the price of grain up due to a scarcity of grain in the market place.  This will make him very wealthy, but in time it will backfire on him.  The people, who need grain, will begin to curse him because his actions are preventing them from eating - or is making it to where being able to provide food is becoming very expensive.  The cost is not coming due to natural reasons such as a flood or drought or crop failure.  The added cost is coming due to a man's greed.  But for the man who sells his grain there will be a blessing - not just a financial one - but one from God Himself.  This proverb allows us to consider the whole area of how Biblical authority addresses economic theory.

In our day it is considered a wise business move to hold on to goods until they wind up in short supply.  This allows the person who has them to artificially inflate the price of what they sell so that they can make huge profits from it.  Such actions eventually become accepted business practices on larger levels so that embargos are used by nations to boost the price of their domestic products.  In time groups of businesses form consortiums that try to corner an entire market so that they can set the price wherever they want.  The government then steps in a tries to enforce what they call "social justice."  They impose restrictions on businesses so that things will be fair.  The problem is that in time the government oversteps their bounds and corruption within the government (due to the sin nature in all of us) begins to crystalize.  It is then that officials learn how to use their power to corner their own political markets and do the very thing they initially were trying to prevent in the public sector.  The problem throughout all this is that the poor are hurt the most by such practices. 

Some think wrongly that the end of all labor is to make money.  But Scripture militates against that philosophy.  God desires us to work hard and be diligent to make a profit - but - He also desires for us to be compassionate in the process.  This sets up a very interesting tension in life and in the economic theory that governs Bible-believing Christians.  At one end is the philosophy of pure Capitalism.  This philosophy functions under the idea that life is about the profit motive at all times.  But God warns against a "love of money" which He says is a root of all sorts of evil.  At the other end is Socialism and Communism.  This philosophy functions under the assumption that a government should rule over all land and production efforts.  Their goal is then to take all profits and distribute them equally to all the people.  Both of these extremes will fail.

Pure Capitalism will fail because greed will so rule men's hearts that they will lack compassion for others - and especially for the poor.  In time their greed will consume them with a desire for more and more profit - and an insatiable desire for more and more wealth.  In the process they will shut their hearts to the plight of the poor.  This will lead to greater levels of abuse of the poorest - who will then curse those who have the economic power - and will ultimately lead to revolution and the overthrow of those who have the wealth and power in society.

Communism and Socialism will fail because of greed as well.  Though such economic philosophies sound wonderful at the outset, they fail because of several factors.  First, there is no man who is not fallen.  When given the power to confiscate the wealth of a society, they will NOT distribute it equally.  They will eventually treat themselves well - and let the rest of society live on the rest.  This has happened in every situation when such an economic system prevails.  Their goals may sound lofty, but their practices wind up eerily similar to the captialist.  Second, there is no motive in this system to work.  Actually there is a motive - to do what you do for the good of all others in the collective society.  But this equates good as distributing things equally among all in the society.  This will not work in a fallen world because over time some will sinfully decide that if they don't work hard - or at all - they will still get an equal part of the collective pie.  Others who intially work hard - will be greatly discouraged that it is their hard work that is allowing the lazy, the undisciplined, and the slothful to live just as they do.  In time there will be an equality - but it will be an equality of poverty and want - because no one will be motivated to work to the best of their ability.  No matter how hard they work - they only get the same part of the collective's goods.  These will never be enough for collective prosperity because sinfulness will move many to barely work at all - or at a level where they are forced to work. 

The system God will bless is one that encourages and rewards hard work and industriousness.  This is captialism - but there must be a restraint in this system as well, if it is to succeed.  This is what I call "Compassionate Captialism."  It is a system where the profit motive and self-interest is encouraged.  But it is also a system that values compassion and kindness.  Where a profit and self-interest motive might move a man to withhold grain so he can make an obscene profit - he does not do it.  He is moved by the desire to serve those who buy his grain.  Understanding this he chooses to sell his grain - not just for a profit - but for a profit that also allows those who are poor to be able to afford to feed their families.  In the end, this man is blessed with profit - and also is blessed with the favor of God for acting with kindness and compassion toward those who can easily be taken advantage of by the system.  He chooses a wise profit level rather than one driven by greed alone.  This promotes peace and the welfare of all those in the market. 

It is fascinating to see the wisdom of God address all areas of life.  One would not readily think that the Word of God would be a good place to learn economic principles.  Yet when we read and mediatate on God's Word - immeasurable benefit is gained from it.  Oh, that we would not divorce academic pursuit from the queen of the sciences - theology.  May God gives us wisdom to see that His perspective is best in all academic and lifestyle pusuits.  Then we can be blessed - not just a religious context - but in all of life.

Gracious Women and Ruthless Men - Proverbs 11:16

A gracious woman attains honor, And ruthless men attain riches.  Proverbs 11:16

Two types of people are contrasted here.  There is the gracious woman and the ruthless man.  They are viewed from what they attain in life.  The word "attain" is important here for it refers to what a person grasps or holds.  The gracious woman seeks for honor, while the ruthless man is seeking riches. 

The rich man is called "ruthless."  This is the Hebrew word "ariys" which means to be ruthless, strong, and violent.  The word usually refers to a ruler, kind, or master who behaves ruthlessly toward those under him like a tyrant.  This person is insolent, proud, haughty, and violent.  As a result the general attitude toward him by those around him is fear.  This ruthless man does not care about true honor or respect.  He rules by fear, intimidation, and an overpowering hand and demeanor.  What he wants is not repect - but riches.  And what we read here is that he grabs all he can get - and attains those riches.  Anyone who follows politics and those who wield power in the financial world knows that there are a myriad of men who get their riches by less than favorable means.  They dominate others and often do dispicable things.  In the process they get a lot of money.  What is not told often enough is that even though they have the money - they do not have peace, joy - and often cannot sleep because their lack of character costs them dearly.  They wind up as the typical rich, lonely, miserable old man - whose only friends are the sycophantic ones who stay only to feed on the corpses of his corporations and bank accounts.  There is little love lost or tears shed when he dies. 

The gracious woman is seen in stark contrast to this rich, ruthless man.  One of the best pictures of this gracious woman is Ruth.  She faced an uphill battle her entire life.  When her husband died, she was left with nothing - except a sister-in-law who was a widow too - and a mother-in-law whose life was shattered.  Ruth chose to be gracious every step of the way.  Her daily existence in Israel, when they moved back, was spent gleaning in fields that were not hers living on the kindness of others.  In the midst of all this she was the most gracious of women - not complaining of her circumstances or of the back-breaking work she endured for an entire harvest.  She and her mother-in-law endured a very meager existance that entire Fall - yet no griping was heard from Ruth.  She was the picture of a gracious, godly, quiet-spirited woman.  She worked hard and was grateful for everything she received. 

In the end, Ruth was seen as a woman of honor.  Even though she was a foreigner and a Gentile, she was seen in the community as a highly honorable woman.  She followed customs that were not her own - being obedient to a mother-in-law in the process.  Her graciousness was honored in the end though.  She was given a new husband - a godly, wealthy, wonderful man named Boaz.  Although starting at what had to be the very bottom of society in Israel - God gave her honor in two ways.  There was her new husband Boaz - who was a gift from God.  There was even a greater honor - and that was her great grandson.  His name . . . David.  Honor comes to a gracious woman - and that lasts much longer than the riches of the ruthless man.  If you do not believe that - just ask Nabal, the rich farmer or the rich man in the gospels.  Their ruthlessness gained them great riches - for a short season - followed by an eternity in punishment and pain.
